ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING DECEMBER 16, 2016

Schmit on WORT Radio : On December 15, 2016, Tim Schmit discussed the 50 year history of geostationary "weather" satellites on the Perpetual Notion Machine show on WORT FM radio. Advanced Technology Satellite (ATS)-1 to the greatly improved capabilities of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES)-16 were covered. Paper Published on Satellite Data Rescue: A paper titled "Recent advances in satellite data rescue" by Paul Poli (Meteo-France), including co-author D. Santek, was recently published in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS). The article includes efforts at the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) in rescuing satellite data from the 1970s for the Synchronous Meteorological Satellite (SMS) and Meteosat-1 geostationary satellites. Report Published: The Annual Supplement of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS), "Explaining Extreme Events of 2015 from a Climate Perspective", was published on 15 December 2016 in tandem with a media/press conference at the Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). The report is consistently on the the list of "Most Read" articles of all AMS journals and continues to expand in scope each year. Jim Kossin (NCEI/CWC) serves as an Editor. (J. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

ASPB Completes the 2017 Combined Federal Campaign Pledges: The Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) completed the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) during December 2016 with a donation total of almost $3800 to the Badgerland CFC in Madison, WI. One NOAA Office of Atmospheric Research (OAR) colleague, who has spent time in Madison, also contributed to this generous total from the NOAA contingent at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), wherein the ASPB is stationed in Madison. With this contribution, a participation rate of 116% was achieved. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

VIIRS Aerosol and CrIS/ATMS presentations at 2016 Fall AGU: Brad Pierce presented a talk entitled "JPSS Observations of Intercontinental Pollution and Atmospheric River Transport Processes during the 2016 NOAA El Niño Rapid Response (ENRR) Field Campaign" at the NOAA Booth and a oral presentation entitled "High Resolution Trajectory-Based Smoke Forecasts Using VIIRS Aerosol Optical Depth and NUCAPS Carbon Monoxide Retrievals" during the Space-Based, Operational Global Earth Observations from Suomi National Polar-Orbiting Partnership (S-NPP), the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS)Session at the Fall 2016 American Geophysical Union (AGU) meeting in San Francisco, CA.
