Columbia Journalism Review Interview: Jim Kossin (NCEI/CWC) was interviewed by Rob Verger of the Columbia Journalism Review on how the media treats stories of extreme events, with an emphasis on 2016's Hurricane Alex. The story should appear late this week. (Jim Kossin, NCEI/CWC, 608-265-5356)

Global Cryosphere Watch Steering Group Meeting: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW) Steering Group (GSG) held its fourth meeting in Cambridge, UK, 16-20 January 2017. The meeting was hosted by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). Jeff Key attended as the Science Advisor to the Steering Group and as a lead and member of several GCW task teams. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

NOAA Stakeholder Interactions: NOAA’s insurance and reinsurance stakeholders have been dialoguing with Jim Kossin (NCEI/CWC) about the results of a recent paper related to U.S. coastal hurricane risk (Kossin, J. P., 2016, Hurricane intensification along United States coast suppressed during active hurricane periods, Nature, doi:10.1038/nature20783). These dialogues have led to two stories aimed at the insurance/reinsurance community. One was published in the Insurance Insider and the other was published by XL Catlin.
