ARR for MODIS-AVHRR Winds Algorithm Transition: An Algorithm Readiness Review (ARR) was held on March 16, 2017 for the transition of MODIS and AVHRR polar winds products from the heritage winds algorithm to the one used for the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). No significant issues were identified. The updated products are planned for operations in June 2017. The current MODIS and AVHRR winds products will be retired in February 2018. (J. GOES-16 Cases on the CIMSS Satellite Blog: Seven additional GOES-16 cases were posted on the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/category/goes-16). Examples included an Upper Midwest to Northeast US winter storm, a mesovortex over Lake Michigan, a rocket launch signature, and Red/Green/Blue (RGB) and Brightness Temperature Difference products in Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS). Invitation to Present: Jim Kossin (NCEI/CWC) has been invited to speak at a workshop at Columbia University. The workshop has been organized by a mix of academics and NOAA stakeholders from the reinsurance sector. Kossin will discuss observed changes in coastal hurricane exposure, impacts, and risk. (J. VISITORS:

Head of NOAA Arctic Research Program Visits Madison: Dr. Jeremy Mathis, the head of NOAA's Arctic Research Program, visited the University of Wisconsin-Madison on March 14, 2017. He gave a seminar in the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS) department, and visited with scientists and graduate students from NOAA's Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB), the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), and AOS.
