CIMSS Scientist Visits WFOs and Talks about GOES-R: Scott Lindstrom (CIMSS) visited Weather Forecast Offices in Indianapolis IN, Wilmington OH, Pittsburgh PA and State College PA during the week of 10-14 April. At each WFO he conferred with the Science and Operations Officers and gave a general lecture on the capabilities on the Advanced Baseline Image (ABI) and Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) that are on GOES-16. The talk was supplementary to the Satellite Foundation Course for GOES-R (SatFC-G) that all WFO staff must take and included recent examples from GOES-16. (S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 608-263-4425)

David Tobin Receives Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Research: David Tobin, senior scientist at the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was selected to receive the 2017 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research as an independent investigator (http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/news/articles/9894). Tobin has earned a global reputation as a scientist supplying the world with better knowledge of climate trends and hazardous weather. His pioneering work with hyperspectral infrared sounders has increased their accuracy, leading to fewer forecasting errors and giving scientists greater confidence in their research findings.
