ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING MAY 5, 2017

IN THE PRESS:

Interview on Florida Television station: Jim Kossin (NCEI/CWC) was interviewed, via Skype, by a broadcast journalist at Florida's WPTV about his research on U.S. hurricane threat (http://www.wptv.com/weather/hurricane/study-invisible-protective-barrier-protected-florida-during-active-hurricane-seasons). (J. Kossin, NCEI/CWC, 608-265-5356)

Columbia Journalism Review Article: A number of interviews given by Jim Kossin (NCEI/CWC), in addition to emails collected through the Freedom of Information Act, were used in an article about last year's Hurricane Alex and connections with climate change (https://www.cjr.org/the_feature/hurricane-climate-change-journalism.php). (J. Kossin, NCEI/CWC, 608-265-5356)

BAMS Article Published on the Advanced Baseline Imager: A Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS) article was published on the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI). The article gives an overview of the ABI instrument, operation and many uses. The full citation is: Schmit, T. J., P. Griffith, M. M. Gunshor, J. M. Daniels, S. J. Goodman, and W. J. Lebair, 2017: A closer look at the ABI on the GOES-R series. Bull. Amer. Meteor. Soc., 98, 681-698, doi:10.1175/BAMS-D-15-00230.1. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

WMO Meeting on Satellite Utilization and Products: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) held its third meeting of the Inter-Programme Expert Team on Satellite Utilization and Products (IPET-SUP-3), 2-3 May 2017. Mike Pavolonis (NOAA/NESDIS/STAR) participated via phone to provide a summary of recent activities related to the Sustained, Coordinated Processing of Environmental Satellite Data for Nowcasting (SCOPE-Nowcasting) Volcanic Ash Pilot Project. The Volcanic Ash Pilot Project, lead by Pavolonis, includes an international inter-comparison activity aimed at improving and harmonizing global volcanic ash satellite remote sensing capabilities in response to the needs of aviation stakeholders (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/meetings/vol_ash15/). The second stage of the inter-comparison activity, which will in part assess the impact of next generation satellites such as GOES-16 and Himawari-8, will commence in 2018. The NOAA/NESDIS VOLcanic Cloud Analysis Toolkit (VOLCAT) is one of the 22 satellite remote sensing methods being analyzed and compared to other methodologies. (M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Satellite Imagery of Aeroflot 270 Severe Turbulence Encounter: Himawari-8 images during the time that Aeroflot Flight 270 encountered severe turbulence (injuring 27 passengers) were posted on the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/23875). A small cluster of rapidly-developing thunderstorms were the likely cause of the turbulence. (S. Griffin, CIMSS, 608-262-0986, T. Wimmers, CIMSS, S. Bachmeier, CIMSS)

European Nowcasting Conference: Ralph Petersen (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, CIMSS) attended the European Nowcasting Conference at Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD), Offenbach, Germany from 3-5 May 2017 and presented 2 papers entitled, "Aircraft Moisture Observations: Their importance in Nowcasting and NWP" and "Improving Satellite-based Convective Weather Nowcasts by coupling short-range GOES-R Legacy Sounding NearCasts to Convective Initiation Product". Co-authors on these presentations are from CIMSS, NWS, United Parcel Service, the Naval Research Laboloratoy, and the University of Alabama-Huntsville. (R. Petersen, CIMSS, 608-263-4030)

Invited Presentation: Jim Kossin (NCEI/CWC) gave an invited presentation at the Invited presentation given at the University of Wisconsin Climate Change Symposium in the DeLuca Forum of the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery. The talk was entitled "Interdecadal Variations of Coastal impacts from Atlantic Major Hurricanes". (J. Kossin, NCEI/CWC, 608-265-5356)
