2017 Lake Michigan Ozone Study Underway: The 2017 Lake Michigan Ozone Study (LMOS 2017) science flights began on Monday, May 22, 2017 with a flight over Chicago and a second flight over Milwaukee on Thursday, May 25, 2017. The objectives of these flights were to measure nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and formaldehyde (HCHO) emissions with the Geostationary Trace gas and Aerosol Sensor Optimization (GeoTASO) instrument and conduct microphysical sampling of clouds and aerosols with the Airborne Hyper-Angular Rainbow Polarimeter (AirHARP)instruments on the NASA Langley Research Center Beechcraft UC‐12. Preliminary GOES-16 imagery, combined with High Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) simulated infrared brightness temperature forecasts from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) HRRR Validation project (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/hrrrval/) were critical for the success of the LMOS science flights due to complex cloud structures. Airborne and ground based measurements from LMOS will be used for GOES-16 Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) product validation during the GOES-16 post launch test period (R.B. Pierce, E/RA2, 608-890-1892, brad.pierce@noaa.gov)

JPSS PGRR Presentations: The Annual Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Proving Ground and Risk Reduction (PGRR) Review took place this week in College Park, Maryland. Several Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) scientists made presentations. Andrew Heidinger gave presentations on two his RR projects. Brad Pierce presented on a new initiative focused on Air Quality and Michael Pavolonis presented on new focus area dealing with sulfur dioxide applications. Jeff Key gave a presentation on experimental products relevant to the planned JPSS PGRR Arctic Initiative. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Meeting Attended: A workshop sponsored by MIT and the Risk Prediction Initiative (RPI) was held at The Collider in Asheville, NC this week. The scoping meeting for the workshop took place in May 2016 at the AMS Conference on Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology. The objective of the meeting was to flesh out a plan to reanalyze the extant global hurricane data to address known biases and temporal and regional inconsistencies. In attendance were scientists from WMO Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres at La Reunion, Guam, and the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami, and scientists from Bermuda and the U.S. (including MIT, UNC, NCAR, NCEI, CIMSS, CICS, and CIRA).
