ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING JUNE 16, 2017

IN THE PRESS:

GOES-16 in June Outside Magazine: The June edition of Outside magazine had a note on GOES-16 entitled "Eye in the Sky: NOAA's new satellite will make forecasting devastating storms and epic powder days more accurate than ever." Joe Pica, director of NOAA NWS's office of observations was quoted "For forecasters, these satellites are the most critical tools we have". The on-line version, with Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) images is available at https://www.outsideonline.com/2183496/eye-sky. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

Wisconsin Public Radio Lake Michigan Ozone Study interview: Brad Pierce was interviewed by the Wisconsin Public Radio station in Milwaukee, WI on Monday, June 12, 2017 about the objectives of the 2017 Lake Michigan Ozone Study (LMOS 2017) and how GOES-16 product validation is being conducted during the field campaign. Tim Wagner from the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC), David Williams from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Jay Al-Saadi from NASA Langley Research Center were also interviewed. An Open House will occur on Saturday, June 17, 2017 where the public can see how NOAA, NASA, EPA and university scientists are using satellites, ground based and aircraft measurements to better understand air quality along the western shore of Lake Michigan (R.B. ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Paper Published on Sea Ice Concentration Validation: A paper titled "Validation of Suomi-NPP VIIRS Sea Ice Concentration with Very High-Resolution Satellite and Airborne Camera Imagery" has been published in the Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. One of the main conclusions of this paper is that sea ice concentration from the Enterprise algorithm met the specifications for the uncertainty based on comparison with estimates from two Very High Spatial Resolution Imagery. Co-authors are Daniel Baldwin, Mark Tschudi, Fabio Pacifici, and Yinghui Liu. (Y. Liu, CIMSS, 608-265-8620)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

ICWG report to CGMS: Andrew Heidinger gave a remote presentation to the 45th Plenary Session of the Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites (CGMS). He gave the status report for the International Cloud Working Group (ICWG), which was founded in 2015. The report consisted of the ICWG's responses to actions it received from CGMS over the past year and discussion of modifications of the ICWG's scope and interactions with other international bodies. He is currently co-chairing the ICWG with Rob Robelling of the EUropean organization for the exploitation of METeorological SATellites (EUMETSAT). The CGMS meeting has held on Jeju Island, Korea. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov)

VISITORS:

DoD Visitors: Visitors from the Department of Defense spent several days at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) this week discussing collaborate projects and proposals. Major Brian DeCicco from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) in Hawaii is a Typhoon Duty Officer responsible for tropical cyclone forecasts and hazard alerts for the U.S. Navy and Air Force assets worldwide. Dr. Joshua Cossuth is a researcher with the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) specializing in tropical cyclone satellite applications. Major DeCicco briefed CIMSS scientists and researchers on how satellite products are used at JTWC, including important products derived at CIMSS. Potential new products that would serve JTWC areas of need were discussed. A strong partnership with NRL has helped enable CIMSS researchers to address these user needs, in conjunction with leveraging NESDIS support and research foci on tropical cyclone satellite applications.
