ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Paper Published on Comparison of Satellite-derived Radiative Fluxes in the Arctic: A paper detailing an intercomparison of satellite-derived Arctic surface radiative fluxes was published in the Journal of Geophysical Research - Atmospheres. The paper is titled "An intercomparison and validation of satellite-based surface radiative energy flux estimates over the Arctic", with authors Aku Riihelä, Jeff Key, Jan Fokke Meirink, Peter Kuipers Munneke, Timo Palo, and Karl-Göran Karlsson (JGR, 2017, 122, pp. 4829–4848, doi:10.1002/ 2016JD026443). It was found that different data sets have not only individual strengths but also individual weaknesses that should be improved upon to enable a cohesive investigation of the radiative energy balance at annual and decadal time scales. Manuscript on Radiative Transfer Mode for Hyperspectral Infrared Radiance Simulation in Cloudy Skies Published : A manuscript entitled "An efficient radiative transfer model for hyperspectral IR radiance simulation and applications under cloudy sky conditions" has been published in the Journal of Geophysical Research - Atmospheres (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2016JD026273/epdf). Coauthors are Jun Li, Zhenglong Li, Pei Wang (CIMSS), Tim Schmit (STAR), Wenguang Bai (CMA) and Robert Atlas (AOML). (Jun Li, CIMSS, 608-262-3755, Jun.Li@ssec.wisc.edu)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

AMS Summer Community Meeting: The American Meteorological Society (AMS) summer community meeting was held in Madison, Wisconsin, on 2 and 3 August 2017. This annual meeting brings together the three main sectors in the weather, water, and climate enterprise: academia, government, and industry. There were seven panel discussions, including three with an emphasis on weather satellites. Those panels included scientists from both the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and the NESDIS STAR Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB), including Michael Pavolonis, Timothy Schmit, Ralph Petersen, and Hank Revercomb. Jordan Gerth, who is a representative from academia on the AMS Board on Enterprise Communication, moderated the first session and helped organize the meeting, as well as the preceding National Weather Service (NWS) partners’ meeting, attended by the NWS senior leadership. (J. Gerth, CIMSS, 608-263-4942, M. Pavolonis, T. Schmit, R. Petersen, H. Revercomb)

VISITORS:

NOAA Visitors: A number of NOAA administrators, program scientists, and managers were in Madison, WI, the week of August 1, 2017 for the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Community Meeting and the National Weather Service (NWS) Summer Partners Meeting. Some visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and the Space Science Engineering Center (SSEC) on August 3 for discussions and a tour. Visitors included Steve Goodman (GOES-R Program Senior Scientist), Tim Walsh (GOES-R Deputy Flight Project Manager), Kelly Turner (NESDIS Chief of Staff), Louis Uccellini (NWS Director), John Murphy (NWS Chief Operating Officer), and Michael Clark (Office of Management and Budget; not NOAA), and others.
