JPSS Science Meeting: Jordan Gerth (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, CIMSS) and Mike Pavolonis (NOAA/NESDIS/STAR) participated in a Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) science meeting held at Vandenburg Air Force Base (VAFB) in Lompoc, CA on November 8, 2017. The primary goal of the meeting was to compare summary reports from the STAR JPSS Science Meeting with the Proving Ground and Risk Reduction (PGRR) Review and look for common interests to further promote underutilized products. Jordan Gerth provided briefings on JPSS activities in the National Weather Service Pacific Region and the use of false color imagery. Mike Pavolonis briefed on the JPSS cloud and volcanic ash products. The meeting was attended by several weather forecasters from the Air Force 30th Operations Support Squadron. Thus, there were also productive discussions on how JPSS, and NOAA/NESDIS satellite products in general, can help support the 30th Operations Support Squadron. An additional side meeting has held at the Air Force 30th Operations Support Squadron operations facility on November 9, 2017 to develop action items aimed at improving their access to NOAA satellite products. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Participation in WMO Aeronautical Meteorology Scientific Conference: Ralph Petersen and Tim Wagner, Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), attended the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Aeronautical Meteorology Scientific Conference in Toulouse France from 6-10 November 2017. The purpose of this conference, which met for the first time in 50 years, was to compile the needs for observations, products and services needed for global and national aviation operations during the next 30-50 years. Ralph Petersen presented a paper "Automated Aircraft Observations: Their importance to Future Aviation Transportation Operations" with co-authors Brett Hoover, Anne-Sophie Daloz, Lee Cronce, Tim Wagner, Skyler Williams, Richard Mamrosh, Randy Baker, Patricia Pauley and Nancy Baker. The paper quantified the benefits of Temperature, Wind and Moisture Observations provide operationally by commercial aircraft to subjective forecasting and NWP. Tim Wagner presented a review of satellite products developed by CIMSS and their applicability to current and future air transportation systems. The paper entitled "Operational uses of satellite observations for aviation support: today and tomorrow" was co-authored by Ralph Petersen and Wayne Feltz. (R. Petersen, CIMSS, 608-263-4030; T. Wagner, CIMSS)

GOES-16 presentation at NSTA Milwaukee: Margaret Mooney from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) co-presented on GOES-16 at the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) regional conference in Milwaukee Wisconsin on November 10, 2017. She was joined by two founding teachers from the GOES-R Education Proving Ground (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/education/goesr/): Craig Phillips and Brian Witthun. Mooney presented on the GOES-R satellite series before Phillips and Witthun shared their experiences working with CIMSS and NOAA's Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) and the lesson plans they developed for the project.
