CIMSS CrIS Radiance Assimilation Work Highlighted by EOS: The Editors' Highlight about the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) paper "The impact of Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) cloud-cleared radiances on Hurricane Joaquin (2015) and Matthew (2016) forecasts" has been published on Eos.org. The news outlines how the assimilation of cloud-cleared infrared data improves numerical weather forecasting, especially for hurricanes, by providing thermodynamic information in cloudy atmosphere. Technical Interchange Teleconference Between NOAA, JMA and the Australian BOM: On January 24, 2018 there was a technical interchange teleconference between NOAA, JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency), and BOM (Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology). The recordings for each of the presentations have been posted on the Australian VLab Centre of Excellence web page at http://www.virtuallab.bom.gov.au/events/. The presentations were: an approach for identifying turbulence signatures in Himawari-8 and GOES-16 water vapour imagery" (Anthony Wimmers, University of Wisconsin), the RGB Expert and Developers Workshop 2017 (Akihiro Shimizu, JMA), topics covered during the monthly Australian VLab Centre of Excellence Regional Focus Group meetings, including contributions from the regions (Bodo Zeschke, BMTC/BOM), and research pertaining to "How Himawari-8 data has revolutionised the work of Australian Bureau of Meteorology Forecasters" (Bodo Zeschke, BMTC/BOM). Leo-Geo Winds Now Monitored by ECMWF: The "leo-geo" polar wind product that is generated in near real-time at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), is now being monitored by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) for use their global model. The leo-geo wind product combines data from geostationary and polar-orbiting satellites to form Arctic and Antarctic composites from which winds are derived. This winds product fills in a latitude gap between the coverages of the traditional geostationary- and polar orbiting-derived winds. (D. Santek, CIMSS, 608-263-7410; M. Lazzara, SSEC; J. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Presentation on Tornado Simulation: Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientist Leigh Orf gave an invited presentation titled "Simulating Devastating Tornadoes in Supercell Thunderstorms" at the 29th Annual Weather Summit, a conference attended by major broadcast meteorologists around the country. The Summit was held in Steamboat Springs, CO. Orf presented recent work that showed visualizations of every model time step (1/6 second) during the formation of an EF5 tornado in a supercell as well as in its mature stage. Preparing for NOAA-20 CrIS Beta Maturity: Justification for the CrIS advanced sounder on NOAA-20 being declared Beta maturity has been assembled over the first three weeks of science data availability (starting 5 January 2018). The Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) CrIS SDR group (Dave Tobin, PI) has played a significant role as part of the SDR cal/val team led by NOAA STAR, with contributions including improved non-linearity coefficients, FOV-2-FOV relative spectral calibration assessments, and VIIRS intercalibration. The instrument is proving to be excellent, with progress happening much faster than for the first instrument on Suomi NPP. (H. Revercomb, SSEC)
