PATMOS-x AVHRR Solar Reflectance Calibration ATBD: The Pathfinder Atmospheres Extended (PATMOS-x) Team generates operational climate data records (CDRs) for the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and delivers them to the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). Since the AVHRR has no on-board solar calibration system, part of this delivery is the generation of the solar channel reflectance calibration information. This year, the PATMOS-x Team developed a new version of the Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document (ATBD) and delivered it this week to NCEI. This same document will be delivered to the Global Space-based Intercalibration System (GSICS). The new version describes the extension of the PATMOS-x method to new sites, the incorporation of new reference data and improved sensor-to-sensor adjustments. PATMOS-x is used for cloud, aerosol and solar energy climate studies and the accuracy and consistency of the solar channel calibrations are critical. (A. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

First Place at State High School Science Fair: Aashna Sheth, a junior at Tesla STEM High School located in Redmond, WA, won 1st place in the Physics, Astronomy, and Mathematics category of the 61st Annual Washington State Science and Engineering Fair for her project "The Application of Microwave Satellite Data to the Statistical Hurricane Intensity Prediction Scheme". She also won the "Outstanding Statistical Thinking Award", the Office of Naval Research "Naval Science Award" for "an exceptional project in science or engineering of interest to the US Navy", the Sigma Chi award, the Mu Alpha award, and the American Meteorological Society "Certificate of Outstanding Achievement" for "excellence in atmospheric or related sciences". Aashna had previously won 1st place and other awards at the regional science fair (reported in the weekly highlights for the week ending 16 March). Jim Kossin (NCEI/CWC) has served as Aashna's Mentor for the project. (J. Kossin, NCEI/CWC, 608-265-5356)
