ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING JUNE 29, 2018

IN THE PRESS:

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert commentary, interviews, and imagery to news media. In the news this week: 1) The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education at the UW-Madison announced NOAA ASPB scientist Brad Pierce as the next director of SSEC. UW News and SSEC News published the story (https://go.wisc.edu/01yix0, http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/news/articles/11087). 2) CIMSS Satellite Blog contributor Scott Bachmeier published posts on waves over the upper Midwest (June 23), severe storms in KA and OK (June 23), severe thunderstorms in the Southeast US (June 25), and river valley fog in the Upper Midwest (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/). 3) ASPB scientist Tim Schmit and CIMSS scientist Joleen Feltz provided GOES-16 imagery for the NOVA special, "Rise of the Superstorms" about Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria (https://go.wisc.edu/925yzs). The program aired on June 27, 2018 on PBS (https://www.pbs.org/video/rise-of-the-superstorms-oufiyb/).While different enhancements were applied, the original imagery was similar to this infrared animation: http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/maria_early_ir_loop_final.mp4. Original image files can be found at https://go.wisc.edu/lwn6av and ftp://ftp.ssec.wisc.edu/ABI/joleenf/harvey/. (J. Phillips, SSEC, 608-262-8164, S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, T. Schmit, ASPB, J. CIMSS 2018 Student Workshop: NOAA’s Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) hosted their annual summer program for high school students this week featuring content on satellite remote sensing, meteorology, geology, limnology and astronomy. CIMSS Tropical Cyclone researcher Derrick Herndon was the 2018 director of the time-honored Earth science camp, offered since 1991. Twenty students from eight states traveled to Madison for this unique experience. New this year was a hands-on activity exploring GOES-16 data using the Satellite Information Familiarization Tool (SIFT). The breadth of content and learning opportunities offered epitomize CIMSS’s commitment to maintaining a pipeline to future scientists. (D. Herndon, CIMSS, 608-262-6741, M. Mooney, CIMSS, 608-265-2123, M. Vasys, CIMSS, 608-263-7435, S. Lindstrom, SSEC, 608-263-4425, J. Gerth, CIMSS, 608-263-4942, Tim Schmit, E/RA2 608-263-0291)

Manuscript on Inter-comparison Between VIIRS and CrIS Published: A manuscript titled "Intercomparison Between VIIRS and CrIS by Taking Into Account the CrIS Subpixel Cloudiness and Viewing Geometry" has been published in Journal of Geophysical Research - Atmospheres. Co-authors are Xinya Gong, Zhenglong Li, Jun Li, Christopher C. Moeller (CIMSS), Changyong Cao (STAR), Wenhui Wang (ERT), and W. Paul Menzel (CIMSS). (Jun Li, 608-262-3755, Jun.Li@ssec.wisc.edu)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

SCAR/IASC Conference: POLAR2018 is a joint event from the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research SCAR and the International Arctic Science Committee IASC. The SCAR/IASC Open Science Conference was held in Davos, Switzerland from 19-23 June 2018. Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) research scientist Yinghui Liu participated the conference, and gave a presentation titled "Cloud Role in Surface Radiation in Moisture and Sensible Heat Flux into Arctic". (Y. Liu, CIMSS, 608-265-8620)

Presentation for Teachers in Oregon: On June 27, T. Schmit spoke to educators in Oregon for almost two hours about remote sensing, Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-16 and available resources such as https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/goesdata.html#training. The teachers, part of the Northwest Earth and Space Science Pipeline (NWESSP) (https://nwessp.org/about) are going to develop lesson plans associated with remote sensing. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

Aune Gives Invited Lecture at the Annual Civil Air Patrol Encampment: R. Aune (NOAA, retired) delivered a lecture at the 2018 Wisconsin Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Encampment at the Wisconsin Air National Guard's Volk Field on Thursday, June 28. Approximately 75 cadets and CAP personnel attended. Aune covered topics including career paths for the atmospheric sciences, opportunities available at the Space Science and Engineering Center for pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees, and a summary of the extensive research and development in the area of satellite remote sensing with an emphasis on GOES-R. Satellite applications that directly affect aircraft operations were highlighted. (R. Aune, SSEC, 608-262-1071)
