ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING JULY 13, 2018

IN THE PRESS:

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert commentary, interviews, and imagery to news media. In the news this week: 1) Starting in the 1970s, former SSEC scientist and UW Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences alumnus Terry Kelly helped usher in a new era of computer generated weather visualizations. SSEC News published his interesting history (https://www.ssec.wisc.edu/news/articles/11025). 2) CIMSS Satellite Blog contributors Scott Bachmeier and Scott Lindstrom published posts on the Southwest US monsoon convection using GOES-15 and GOES-16 (July 12), stereoscopic views of convection using GOES-16 and GOES-17 (July 12), Tropical Storm and Hurricane Chris (July 8,10,11), a natural gas explosion and fire in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin (July 10), Air Mass RGB view of two different cyclones (July 9), a mesoscale convective vortex generated by monsoon thunderstorms in Arizona (July 9), and blooming canola fields in North Dakota and Manitoba (July 9) (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/). Grandparents University Meteorology Major: NOAA's Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison's (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) co-hosted the UW Grandparents University (GPU) meteorology major for the 13th consecutive summer on July 12-13, 2018. Margaret Mooney from CIMSS served as the meteorology 'dean' again this year. GPU is a unique multi-generational opportunity to reach voting citizens and future scientists in the same outreach event. UW alums and their grandchildren were exposed to 'everything weather' at this 2-day event with a strong focus on weather satellites, emphasizing Madison's legacy as the birthplace of satellite meteorology. VISITORS:

CIMSS Visitor from LANOT in Mexico City: Alejandro Aguilar from Mexico's LANOT (National Earth Observing Laboratory) in Mexico City visited CIMSS on Wednesday 11 July and met with Scott Lindstrom and Jessica Braun. He received a tour of the SSEC Data Center and discussed the Community Software Processing Package (CSPP) Geo software that is used at LANOT to process GOES-16 Imagery.
