ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING AUGUST 31, 2018

IN THE PRESS:

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert commentary, interviews, and imagery to news media. In the news this week: 1) CIMSS Satellite Blog contributors Scott Bachmeier and Scott Lindstrom published posts on "Why mesoscale sectors matter: Hurricane Norman" (August 30), "A Nebraska thunderstorm and Wyoming wildfire as viewed by GOES-15, -17, and -16" (August 29), "Stereoscopic views of convection every minute in mesoscale domains" (August 29), "Severe thunderstorms in Wisconsin" (August 28), "Beta stage GOES-17 imagery now available in AWIPS" (August 28), and "GOES-17 data are flowing in GRB" (August 28). Read more at the CIMSS Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/). (J. Phillips, SSEC, 608-262-8164, S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, S. Lindstrom, SSEC)

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

STAR JPSS Annual Science Meeting: Many Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and Advanced Satellite Products Branch (STAR/ASPB) scientists attended and presented at the STAR JPSS Annual Science Meeting, 27-30 August 2018. The last day of the meeting was a Blended Products Workshop, which had additional presentations by CIMSS and ASPB scientists. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jeff.key@noaa.gov)

National Weather Association Annual Meeting: Jordan Gerth and Chris Schmidt, of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), and Tim Schmit, of the NOAA/NESDIS Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB), presented at the 43rd annual meeting of the National Weather Association (NWA) in St. Louis, Missouri, 27 to 30 August 2018. The NWA annual meeting focuses on observations, science, and services applicable to broadcast and operational meteorologists, including National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists. J. Gerth presented a digital poster with imagery and product examples from geostationary and polar-orbiting satellites of potential value to the attendees. C. Schmidt summarized satellite fire detection techniques in an oral presentation and T. Schmit focused on applications of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R-Series (GOES-R) Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) in his talk. (J. Gerth, CIMSS, 608-263-4942, C. Schmidt, CIMSS, T. Schmit, E/RA2)

GOES-17 ABI Reaches Beta: The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG) Imagery Team presented GOES-17 Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) Cloud and Moisture Imagery (CMI) for beta review status. The Imagery Team presented material to demonstrate that GOES-17 ABI imagery have met the beta quality standards for the Post Launch Product Tests (PLPT), although nine of ten infrared bands can be impacted by the Loop Heat Pipe (LHP) issue, and to outline the path to provisional status. The review occurred on Monday, August 27, 2018, and beta status was declared that afternoon. As a result, GOES-17 ABI data started flowing to users via GOES Re-Broadcast (GRB) on August 28, 2018 and Sectorized Cloud and Moisture Imagery (SCMI) was added to the Satellite Broadcast Network (SBN) for the National Weather Service. (M. Gunshor, CIMSS, 608-263-1146, T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov, J. Nelson, CIMSS).

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Meeting with Industry Stakeholders: Jim Kossin (NCEI/CWC) gave an invited presentation at Tokio Millenium Reinsurance's "TMR Tomorrow Summit" in Palo Alto, CA. The Summit brings NOAA stakeholders from global insurance and reinsurance industries together with leaders of the latest weather- and climate-related tech start-ups. Kossin presented the latest state-of-the-science of tropical cyclone trends over the past 70 years. (J. Kossin, NCEI/CWC, 608-265-5356)
