SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert commentary, interviews, and imagery to news media and participate in events to promote science. In the news this week: CIMSS Satellite blog contributor Scott Bachmeier published posts on "Industrial and ship plumes in supercooled clouds" (Dec. 4), the "SpaceX launch of Spaceflight SSO-A" (Dec. 3), the "Tornado outbreak in Illinois" (Dec. 1), and "GCOM-W1 AMSR2 microwave products" (Nov. 30). CIMSS Board Meeting: The Board of Directors for the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) at the University of Wisconsin–Madison met on 5 December 2018 in Madison, WI. The Board provides oversight and direction to CIMSS as well as communicates NOAA/NASA policies, priorities, and coordination opportunities. At the December meeting, the Board heard about recent CIMSS scientific activities, discussed several emerging areas of importance (including opportunities for evolving geostationary remote sensing, utilizing cloud computing, engaging weather service offices in new developments), approved the nomination of a new Director of CIMSS, and suggested several new members to the CIMSS Science Advisory Council. Professor Tristan L’Ecuyer will assume the CIMSS Directorship at the beginning of 2019. NOAA participants were Stephen Volz, Assistant Administrator for Satellite and Information Services, NOAA/NESDIS, Harry Cikanek, STAR Director, and Louis Uccellini, NOAA's Assistant Administrator for Weather Services (invited guest).
