IN THE PRESS:

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert commentary, interviews, and imagery to news media and participate in events to promote science. In the news this week: 1) CIMSS Satellite Blog contributors Scott Bachmeier and Scott Lindstrom published posts on "Smoke in the Gulf of Mexico" (Apr. 18), "Mesoscale disturbance over northern Alaska" (Apr. 17), "Satellite signatures of the Notre Dame Cathedral fire in Paris, France" (Apr. 15), "GOES-17 loop heat pipe effects on 14 April 2019" (Apr. 15), "Severe weather outbreak across eastern Texas and the Deep South" (Apr. 13) Read more at the CIMSS Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/). Figure: The hazy signature of smoke over the Gulf of Mexico on Apr. 18 is seen in these GOES-16 True Color Red-Green-Blue (RGB) images. The smoke was the result of widespread agricultural burning across southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras. Toward the end of the day, additional small plumes of smoke and blowing dust could be seen moving back across the Gulf of Mexico into the “cleaner” behind the cold front. CIMSS Scientist presents invited seminars in the Midwest: Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Associate Scientist Leigh Orf gave invited seminars at the 23rd Annual Severe Storms & Doppler Radar Conference in Ankeny, IA, the Earth, Planetary, and Atmospheric Science department at Purdue University, and the 5th Annual Dark Skies Severe Weather Seminar at Madison College, Madison, WI. Videos of these presentations are available at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMQZ2sYiMbqyDqvMF5wDPVg. (L. Orf, CIMSS, 608-890-1983)

CIMSS Outreach at Local Elementary School: Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) researchers Mat Gunshor and Tom Whittaker (emeritus) attended the Van Hise Elementary School (Madison, WI) Science Night on April 12, 2019. Over 30 students (grades K-5) stopped by to learn by using interactive educational web apps designed to teach about various weather topics (tornadoes, hurricanes, lightning, snow crystals, and more) on two touch-screen monitors. The web apps used for this exercise are available online at http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/wxfest/. (M. Gunshor, CIMSS, 608-263-1146, Tom Whittaker, CIMSS Emeritus).
