ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING AUGUST 30, 2019

IN THE PRESS:

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert commentary, interviews, and imagery to news media and participate in events to promote science. In the news this week: 1) SSEC News published a story on CIMSS research intern Callyn Bloch's recent paper on the problem of underestimated surface-based CAPE values from satellites: https://www.ssec.wisc.edu/news/articles/12161/. 2) CIMSS scientist Jordan Gerth has been voicing concern over the potential for 5G networks to interfere with forecasting. He was featured in OnWisconsin, the UW-Madison's widely-circulated alumni magazine: https://go.wisc.edu/63tq4o. 3) CIMSS scientist William Straka III discussed Tropical Storm Dorian as it passed over the Leeward Islands on August 27 and provided nighttime imagery for a NOAA/NASA analysis: https://go.wisc.edu/16omo3. 4) CIMSS Satellite Blog contributors Scott Bachmeier and Scott Lindstrom published posts on "Hurricane Dorian" (Aug. 28) and "Using NUCAPS to nowcast convective development" (Aug. 27). Read more at the CIMSS Satellite Blog: http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/. (J. Gerth, CIMSS, W. Straka III, CIMSS, S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, S. Lindstrom, E. Verbeten, SSEC, J. Paper Published on VIIRS Reflective Solar Bands with Collocated CrIS: A manuscript titled "Monitoring the VIIRS Sensor Data Records Reflective Solar Band Calibrations Using DCC With Collocated CrIS Measurements" has been published in the Journal of Geophysical Research - Atmospheres. The study provides a new algorithm to allow weekly and daily time series for monitoring VIIRS reflective solar bands (RSBs) in higher temporal frequencies. This method can be applied to other imagers with collocated advanced infrared sounders for detecting deep convective clouds (DCCs) and monitoring the calibration stabilities of reflective solar bands. Co-authors are Xinya Gong (CMA, also CIMSS), Zhenglong Li, Jun Li , Christopher C. Moeller (CIMSS), and Wenhui Wang (Global Science and Technology, Inc.).
