ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING NOVEMBER 8, 2019

IN THE PRESS:

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert commentary, interviews, and imagery to news media and participate in events to promote science. In the news this week: 1) CIMSS Honorary Fellow Jordan Gerth spoke with the Australian Broadcasting Company about the rollout of 5G and meteorologists' concern about impacts on weather forecasting. (https://go.wisc.edu/241o3e) 2) CIMSS Satellite Blog contributor Scott Bachmeier published posts on the "Potential Vorticity anomaly approaching Baja California and Southern California" (Nov. 5), and the "Antares rocket launch from Wallops Flight Facility, Virginia" (Nov. 2). ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

NASA Precipitation Measurement Missions Science Team Meeting: Scientists from the NOAA Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC), and Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS) attended the 2019 NASA Precipitation Measurement Missions (PMM) Science Team Meeting in Indianapolis, IN. Claire Pettersen (CIMSS/SSEC) and Mark Kulie (NOAA ASPB) - PMM Principal Investigators (PI) - gave invited presentations in a Science Reports oral session and contributed to numerous poster presentations. Norm Wood (CIMSS/SSEC and PMM PI) served as a session chair and provided a poster presentation, while Marian Mateling (AOS) presented a poster. Claire Pettersen also served as a PMM snowfall ground validation working group co-chair and ground validation session panel member. Claire Pettersen and Mark Kulie were also awarded the 2019 PMM Science Team Award for their ground-based snowfall observatory research efforts in collaboration with the Marquette, MI National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office. Visit to TROPOS: A. Heidinger visited the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) last week. TROPOS is located in Leipzig Germany and is funded by the German Federal Government and has an association with the University of Leipzig's Institute for Meteorology (LIM). Heidinger gave a seminar on the results of the recent workshop about the next generation of the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP-NG) and work being done at NOAA/NESDIS on exploiting the native resolution of the GOES-R era data to improve cloud remote sensing applications. TROPOS and LIM have very active surface and airborne measurement programs that could offer value to NOAA/NESDIS. For example, they will participate in a field program in early 2020 centered over Barbados, which falls within the GOES-16 domain. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Guest lecture in UW-Madison AOS graduate course: STAR/ASPB scientist Tim Schmit gave a guest lecture in a graduate course on meteorological satellite applications at the department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS), University of Wisconsin at Madison. The lecture was titled "The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Series Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI)" and covered all aspects of what needs to happen before an image can be generated. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

Keynote Speaker at American Family Insurance Risk Forum: Jim Kossin (NOAA/NCEI) has been invited to serve as the Keynote Speaker at the 2019 American Family Insurance Enterprise Risk Management Forum. He will speak on past and projected relationships between climate change and extreme storm risk. (J. Kossin, NOAA/NCEI, 608-265-5356)
