ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING JANUARY 17, 2020

IN THE PRESS:

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert commentary, interviews, and imagery to news media and participate in events to promote science. In the news this week: 1) CIMSS scientist Scott Bachmeier's interview with Wired magazine on recent pyrocumulonimbus clouds resulting from Australian wildfires has been translated to Japanese: https://go.wisc.edu/94299a. 2)The Green Bay Press Gazette picked up a NOAA-20 image from January 15 created at CIMSS that showed a west coast storm system expected to impact the Western Great Lakes region January 17-18: https://go.wisc.edu/7o8f53. 3) The Weather Guys, Professors Steve Ackerman, CIMSS, and Jonathan Martin, UW-Madison Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, explained pyrocumulus clouds in their weekly Wisconsin State Journal column: https://go.wisc.edu/425r7r/. 4)CIMSS Satellite Blog contributor Scott Bachmeier published posts on "Tropical Cyclone Tino in the South Pacific Ocean" (Jan. 16), "Eruption of the Taal Volcano in the Philippines" (Jan. 12), and "Exploring the effect of parallax" (Jan. 10). University of Wisconsin-Madison CIMSS and SSEC Participation at the 2020 AMS 100th Annual Conference: Representatives from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC), and the NOAA Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) participated in the 100th Annual American Meteorological Society (AMS) meeting held the week of January 12-16, 2020 in Boston, MA. A GOES-R/JPSS Short Course “From GOES-R and JPSS Satellite Data to Disaster Response: Every Decision Counts” was conducted on January 12. There were over 30 oral presentations and posters by CIMSS/SSEC staff as part of the 19th Annual Student Conference, 16th Symposium on New Generation Operational Environmental Satellite Systems, 29th Symposium on Education, 26th Conference on Probability and Statistics, 36th Conference on Environmental Information Processing Technologies, 30th Conference on Weather Analysis and Forecasting (WAF), 26th Conference on Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP), 18th History Symposium, Severe Local Storms Symposium, 10th Symposium on Advances in Modeling and Analysis Using Python, 20th Symposium on Meteorological Observation and Instrumentation. Many participated in board, committee, and other side meetings including with NOAA OAR and NESDIS/STAR upper management on a host of topics. The SSEC booth in the exhibit hall highlighted advances with McIDAS-V, SSEC RealEarth, Virual Reality satellite visualization and other hardware/software support. Selected ‘one-page’ summaries of NOAA funded presentations will be posted at http://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/star/meetings.php with assistance of Ralph Ferraro (STAR). (W. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

IPCC AR6 Second Order Draft Submitted: The Second Order Draft (SOD) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group I (WG1) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) was submitted this week to the IPCC Technical Support Unit (TSU) to be distributed for public review. Jim Kossin (NCEI Center for Weather and Climate) is serving as a Lead Author of Chapter 11 "Weather and climate extreme events in a changing climate", and a Contributing Author in Chapters 8 "Water cycle changes" and 9 "Ocean, cryosphere, and sea level change". Kossin was also recently invited to serve as an Author on the IPCC AR6 Summary for Policymakers (SPM), which is the final essential document synthesized from the AR6 for distribution to policymakers around the world. (J. Kossin, NCEI/CWC, 608-265-5356)

ASPB Participation in the Annual AMS conference: T. Schmit from the Advanced Satellite Projects Branch participated in the annual American Meteorological Conference in a number of ways. This included: being a co-chair of the 16th New Satellites Symposium (http://bit.ly/363ySq3), oral presentations (on the first geostationary imager in 1966 and the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) on GOES-16/17), a student poster judge, a speed mentoring, and session chair. One of the many highlights was an excellent presentation by junior high students (who won the previous GOES virtual science fair). One of the conference themes was the 100th anniversary of the American Meteorological Society (AMS). (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)
