CIMSS AND ASPB WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING JUNE 5, 2020

PRODUCTS AND APPLICATIONS:

Operational Readiness Review for GOES-16 Fog/Low Stratus Products: On June 1, 2020, the Office of Satellite and Product Operations (OSPO) held an Operational Readiness Review (ORR) for the GOES-16 fog/low stratus (FLS) products. The STAR FLS science lead (Mike Pavolonis) and members of the STAR Algorithm Scientific Software Integration and System Transition Team participated. The ORR was successful and the Satellite Product and Services Review Board (SPSRB) will be briefed, on June 17, 2020, that the GOES-16 FLS products are ready for operations. The National Weather Service has utilized the FLS products, in the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS), via an experimental data feed, since 2011. As such, the NWS users have already incorporated the FLS products into their workflows. (M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov)

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert commentary, interviews, and imagery to news media and participate in events to promote science. In the news this week: 1) CIMSS scientist Scott Bachmeier's post on the SpaceX launch of the Crew Dragon Demo-2 mission was picked up by the GOES-R Series/GEO-XO Program Weekly Report for May 25-31, 2020. The thermal signature of combustion byproducts is captured in 1-minute, GOES-16 water vapor imagery. Well before launch, NOAA ASPB scientist Tim Schmit collaborated with NASA and others to ensure that the GOES ABI were in 1-min scanning mode over the region of interest. (May 30"). Read more at the CIMSS Satellite Blog: https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-blog/. (J. Phillips, SSEC, 608-262-8164, S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, T. Schmit, E/RA2, S. Lindstrom, CIMSS)
