CIMSS AND ASPB WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING NOVEMBER 6, 2020

PRODUCTS AND APPLICATIONS:

Image of the Day: The Great Lakes from NOAA-20: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Direct Broadcast group produced the beautiful true-color image of the Great Lakes on 4 November 2020 from VIIRS on NOAA-20. See https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-blog/archives/38837 for more information and a higher-resolution version (https://bit.ly/3etiF39). The Great Lakes images are being made in response to a request from the NOAA CoastWatch Great Lakes Node. They intend to begin posting them to their website. (K. Strabala, CIMSS; S. CIMSS/ASPB provide GOES-17 imagery to support the NWS: The National Weather Service (NWS), with support from the NOAA Office of Satellite and Product Operations (OSPO), is reviewing the possible need to use Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-15 to supplement GOES-17 Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) operations during the upcoming peak GOES-17 heating seasons. An analysis comparing August 29, 2019 to August 29, 2020 to show the year-to-year improvement of GOES-17 data was requested and provided to OSPO. The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provided GOES-17 Focal Plane Module temperature plots along with GOES-17/GOES-16 brightness temperature comparisons from their realtime GOES-17 monitoring website: http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes-r/abi-/band_statistics_imagery.html. CIMSS/ASPB also provided a side-by-side animation comparing August 29, 2019 to August 29, 2020 for Band 13 (the 10.7 micrometer window channel: https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-blog/images/2020/11/CTL_2019_2020_loop_13-15utc_Band13.mp4), as well as links to full day 16 panel animations showing all bands of the full-disk ABI for those two days.
