CIMSS AND ASPB WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING FEBRUARY 12, 2021

PRODUCTS AND APPLICATIONS:

Realtime GOES-15 Sounder Imagery Available Temporarily: As part of routine maintenance, Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-15 has been taken out of storage by the Office of Satellite and Product Operations (OSPO), and is planning to image until February 19. This includes both the Imager and Sounder: https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/rt/viewdata.php?product=gw_all. Thanks go to the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) Data Services for the local ingest and saving of the data. The following CIMSS Satellite Blog has recent imagery from both the imager and sounder: https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-blog/archives/39880. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov; S. Bachmeier, CIMSS; J. Nelson, CIMSS)

WORKSHOPS, CONFERENCES, AND MEETINGS:

TRAINING AND EDUCATION:

Start of a NERTO Internship: R. Adomako, of the New York City College, is beginning his 12-week NERTO (NOAA Experiential Research and Training Opportunities ) internship with Tim Schmit. The topic of the internship is “Using Machine Learning to Identify Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-17 ABI Instrument Imagery Artifacts.” (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

VISIT Training on Satellite Detection of Blowing Snow: Scott Lindstrom from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) gave a Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) presentation on GOES-R Detection of Blowing Snow. The module, created this year, walks forecasters through the ways that blowing snow can be detected from satellite. This module is also available on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVEKXHKS5_g. The live teletraining was presented to a forecaster at the Binghamton NY Forecast Office on 5 February (WFO BGM). (S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 608 263 4425)

VISIT Training on TROWALs: Scott Lindstrom from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) gave a Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) presentation to the Science and Operations Officer (SOO) at the Glasgow MT Forecast Office (WFO GGW). The training was on Troughs of Warm Air Aloft (TROWALs), features associated with extratropical cyclones that can lead to exceptional precipitation amounts. (S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 608 263 4425)

MEDIA AND OUTREACH:

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert interviews, imagery and case studies to promote science. This week: 1) CIMSS Satellite Blog contributors Scott Bachmeier and Scott Lindstrom published case studies on: "GOES-15 temporarily brought out of storage" (Feb. 10), "Ice Motion in Lake Superior" (Feb. 8), "Ice formation in southern Lake Michigan" (Feb. 7), "Blowing snow across the Upper Midwest" (Feb. 6), and "South Atlantic cyclone off the coast of Uruguay" (Feb. 5).
