CIMSS AND ASPB WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING MARCH 12, 2021

PRODUCTS AND APPLICATIONS:

CSPP Geo Gridded GLM Beta Software Package Released: An initial beta version of a software package allowing direct broadcast users to create Gridded Geostationary Lightning Mapper (Gridded GLM) products was released by the Community Satellite Processing Package for Geostationary Data (CSPP Geo) group. The software creates a new set of products (Minimum Flash Area, Flash Extent Density, Total Optical Energy), which have been gridded to the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) 2-km resolution, capturing spatial extent information that is not readily available in the GOES-16 and GOES-17 GLM Level 2+ products. AWIPS-compatible tiles can be generated. This package is the initial public release of capabilities developed at Texas Tech and NOAA; feedback from beta testers will be used to improve the future operational product. (G. WORKSHOPS, CONFERENCES, AND MEETINGS:

Presentation at EUMETSAT MTG 3T Preparatory Forum: Ralph Petersen and Lee Cronce made a virtual presentation entitled "A Multi-satellite Platform Approach to Improve Nowcasts of Short-range Significant Weather Potential" at the 1st EUMETSAT MTG 3T Forum, a workshop to begin early planning for user training regarding possible products and services that could become available after launch of MTG Imagers and Sounders. The talk provided a summary of progress made over the past several years and potential for additional applications of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite StudiesCIMSS NearCast system.Particular focus was placed on the use of microwave retrievals from Polar Orbiting Satellites to fill in data gaps due to clouds in more frequent Geostationary IR retrievals. Futrther collaboration was recommended. (R. Petersen, CIMSS, 262-6763-2583, L. Cronce, CIMSS, 608-265-6282)

TRAINING AND EDUCATION:

MEDIA AND OUTREACH:

University of Wisconsin Stevens Point Outreach Activities: Mark Kulie (STAR/ASPB) recently participated in a virtual science outreach session facilitated by the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point Learning Is ForEver (LIFE) program. Mark provided an overview of NOAA and its diverse mission, hosted a web-based tour of NOAA's satellite observation capabilities, highlighted various Great Lakes weather-related phenomena observed by NOAA sensors, and participated in a question and answer session with LIFE participants. SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert interviews, imagery and case studies to promote science. This week: 1) CIMSS Satellite Blog contributors Scott Bachmeier and Scott Lindstrom published case studies on "Cyclone Habana in the South Indian Ocean" (Mar. 10), "Satellite-based detection of rain amounts" (Mar. 10), "Heavy rainfall in Hawai’i" (Mar. 8), "Prescribed burns in Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri" (Mar. 7), "Hail Storm in Daytona Beach" (Mar. 6), and "Blowing dust in Texas" (Mar. 5).
