WORKSHOPS, CONFERENCES, AND MEETINGS:

49th Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites Working Group 2 Meeting:: The 49th Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites (CGMS) Working Group 2 meeting was held virtually from 26 - 28 April 2021. This meeting is held every year and a subset of the meeting gives the International Science Working Groups (ISWG) the opportunity to update the CGMS with their work during the previous year. The International Winds Working Group (IWWG) is one such group. NOAA personnel in attendance included Jaime Daniels (IWWG CGMS rapporteur), and Andrew Heidinger. Participating Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientists included Steve Wanzong (co-chair IWWG). Steve Wanzong presented a summary of the 15th International Winds Workshop (IWW) and Andrew Heidinger presented the status of the Next Generation International Satellite Cloud Climatology (ISCCP-NG). (S. Wanzong, CIMSS, 608-263-1950; A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov)

TRAINING AND EDUCATION:

Training for Alaska Region Meteorologists: Scott Lindstrom from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) presented a one-hour training on GOES-17 and Himawari-8 imagery to new forecasters at the NWS Alaska Aviation Weather Unit (AAWU) in Anchorage. The topics covered included Parallax, ABI/AHI channels, channel differences and Red/Green/Blue (RGB) composites, the effects of the Loop Heat Pipe performance on GOES-17 imagery. Training also covered Turbulence Probability and GOES-R IFR Probability fields. The presentation and the recording are available to Alaska Region forecasters who because of shift work could not attend in person. (S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 608 263 4425)

MEDIA AND OUTREACH:

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert interviews, imagery and case studies to promote science. This week: 1) CIMSS scientist Jason Otkin spoke with NBC15 about the drier-than-average April that has led to a short-term moderate drought in South Central Wisconsin. Read more: https://www.nbc15.com/2021/04/29/moderate-drought-expands-into-southern-wisconsin/. 2) SSEC researcher Russ Dengel's early mobile-friendly weather site called PDA Animated Weather (or PAW) has been retired. Read more about PAW and its successor, RealEarth: https://www.ssec.wisc.edu/news/articles/13590/. 3) The Tenth Annual Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences (AOSS) Community Poster Reception was held virtually on Apr. 29, 2021. Over 40 attendees visited and discussed 16 posters from researchers, faculty and students. Prizes for Best Posters will be awarded to graduate and undergraduate students. Check here for this year's posters: https://www.ssec.wisc.edu/meetings/aoss-poster/2021-meeting/posters/. 4. CIMSS Satellite Blog contributors Scott Bachmeier and Scott Lindstrom published case studies on "Large hail in southern Texas" (Apr. 28), "Protocol changes to the CIMSS Direct Broadcast ftp website" (Apr. 27), "Three Rivers Fire in New Mexico" (Apr. 26), "Offshore transport of glacial silt from Southeast Alaska" (Apr. 25), "NUCAPS Lapse Rates as showers develop over the upper Midwest" (Apr. 24), "Tropical Cyclone Joba makes landfall in Tanzania" (Apr. 24), and "Satellite signatures of the SpaceX/NASA Crew-2 rocket launch" (Apr. 23).
