49th Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites Plenary Meeting: The 49th Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites (CGMS) Plenary meeting was held virtually 19-21 May 2021. Steve Wanzong presented four recommendations from the International Winds Working Group (IWWG) to the CGMS Plenary. The recommendations, which were approved, were: 1) New Terms of Reference for the IWWG, 2) The adoption of a new Ocean Surface Winds Task Group underneath the IWWG, 3) For NOAA to continue to produce polar AMVs from NOAA-15, 18, 19 and MODIS, and 4) for space agencies to consider to address the gap of 3D AMV profiles based on a combination of lidar and IR sounder missions. SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert interviews, imagery and case studies to promote science. This week: 1) NCEI scientist Jim Kossin was interviewed by NBC Miami for a story on "The Link Between Climate Change and Hurricanes," and another, by The New York Times, "Scientists Predict an ‘Above Normal’ Atlantic Hurricane Season."
