Impact of High Temporal Resolution Hyperspectral IR Radiances on Tropical Cyclone Forecasting Published: A manuscript titled "Impact of high temporal resolution FY-4A Geostationary Interferometric Infrared Sounder (GIIRS) radiance measurements on Typhoon forecasts: Maria (2018) case with GRAPES global 4D-Var assimilation system" has been published in Geophysical Research Letters (GRL) (https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1029/2021GL093672). The study utilized observations from the first hyperspectral infrared sounder in geostationary orbit, and demonstrated how forecasts of typhoon (and therefore hurricane) tracks and intensity can benefit from high spectral IR observations with higher temporal resolution. The higher temporal resolution captures the rapidly changing storm environment. Jun Li, Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), is a co-author. MEDIA AND OUTREACH:

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert interviews, imagery and case studies to promote science. This week: 1. CIMSS Satellite Blog contributor Scott Lindstrom published case studies on "Great Lakes water temperatures" (Aug. 5) and "Sun glint and calm winds" (Aug. 2). Figure: Clear skies over the Great Lakes (except for Lake Superior) allowed VIIRS to record water temperatures early on Aug. 5, 2021. In situ data from moored buoys closely match Advanced Clear-Sky Processor for Oceans values. More at CIMSS Satellite Blog: https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-blog/archives/41770. Credit: CIMSS.
