CIMSS AND ASPB WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING SEPTEMBER 10, 2021

PRODUCTS AND APPLICATIONS:

SSEC Data Services Assisting NOAA with EWS-G1 Data Monitoring: To better understand the US Space Force's Electro-optical Infrared Weather System Geostationary (EWS-G1) data outages, NOAA OPSO (Office of Satellite and Product Operations) is comparing the expected data reception to what data are being brought into the University of Wisconsin-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center's Data Services. EWS-G1 was previously NOAA's Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-13. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov; J. Robaidek, SSEC Data Services)

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert interviews, imagery and case studies to promote science. This week: 1. CIMSS researcher Leigh Orf and graduate student Kelton Halbert of the UW-Madison Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences are co-authors on an article that was published on Sept. 10, 2021 in Science on "Hydraulic jump dynamics above supercell thunderstorms." Read more about the study that was led by researchers at Stanford University and based on modeling work performed at CIMSS in the story published by UW News: https://go.wisc.edu/alin19. See Leigh's hydraulic jump computer-generated simulation at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iPuxfPKgls. 2. SSEC Honorary Fellow Jim Kossin provided expertise to the fact-checking website, Politifact, as it investigated hurricane trends and climate change. Read more: https://go.wisc.edu/kbz416. 3. CIMSS Satellite Blog contributors Scott Bachmeier and Tim Schmit published case studies on "Rapid intensification of Typhoon Chanthu in the West Pacific" (Sept. 7-8), "Mesovortices within the eye of Hurricane Larry" (Sept. 6), and "A GOES ABI View of the Firefly Aerospace’s Maiden Flight" (Sept. 3).
