CIMSS AND ASPB WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING SEPTEMBER 17, 2021

PRODUCTS AND APPLICATIONS:

VIIRS Imagery Viewer: The all-new VIIRS Imagery Viewer hosts 7 days’ worth of imagery over North America — refreshed daily — for all 22 VIIRS channels. NOAA's Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) acquires the data from polar-orbiting satellites via Direct Broadcast. As new images become available from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), they are processed and presented in a thumbnail directory, usually within 60 minutes of acquisition onboard the spacecraft! The thumbnails link to high resolution full overpass images. In addition to the individual bands, the VIIRS Imagery Viewer features multiple Level-2 products. CIMSS Direct Broadcast is one of the few places to access images in all 22 bands collected by VIIRS. The VIIRS Imagery Viewer was developed so that students and citizen scientists could easily access VIIRS products, especially students participating in the JPSS Virtual Science Fair. Visit the VIIRS Imagery Viewer at https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/viirs/imagery-viewer/. (M. Mooney, CIMSS, 608-265-2123, K. Strabala, CIMSS)

TRAINING AND EDUCATION:

Forecaster Training at DMH in Myanmar, Week 1: Scott Lindstrom from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) completed the first week (of two) of remote instruction to staff of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) of the country of Myanmar. The topic of the training was forecasting in a tropical environment, and included instruction on Skew-Ts, Visibility Restrictions, Moisture detection, RGBs, Microwave imagery and Radiation in the atmosphere. The flipped classroom required students to view recorded videos beforehand; in-person Zoom-meeting time with the instructor was dedicated to review and questions. The training is funded by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) through the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR)'s COMET program. (S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 608 263 4425)

MEDIA AND OUTREACH:

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert interviews, imagery and case studies to promote science. This week: 1. SSEC and CIMSS published the Summer/Fall 2021 issue of Through the Atmosphere featuring the latest stories on research and education. Read more: https://www.ssec.wisc.edu/news/articles/13834. 2. CIMSS Satellite Blog contributors Margaret Mooney, Scott Lindstrom, and Scott Bachmeier published case studies on "VIIRS Imagery Viewer is online at CIMSS" (Sept. 15; also see item in this report), "ACSPO SSTs off the Oregon Coast" (Sept. 14), "Hurricane Nicholas makes landfall in Texas" (Sept. 14), (Super Typhoon Chanthu regains Category 5 intensity" (Sept. 11), "Great Lakes water temperatures in early September" (Sept. 10), "The beginning of the extratropical transition of Hurricane Larry" (Sept. 10), and "Pyrocumulonimbus clouds produced by the Cougar Peak Fire in Oregon" (Sept. 9). Figure: NOAA-20 True-Color imagery over the Great Lakes, along with ACSPO SST values derived from VIIRS data, on Sept. 10, 2021 showing lake surface temperatures between 55º and 75º Fahrenheit. Mostly clear skies allowed for an accurate measurement from the satellite. More at the CIMSS Satellite Blog: https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-blog/archives/42398. Credit: CIMSS.
