CIMSS AND ASPB WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING AUGUST 26, 2022

DATA, INFORMATION, AND USE-INSPIRED SCIENCE:

Suomi-NPP Post-Anomaly Cloud, Snow, and Ice Product Checkout: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), Colorado State University Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA), University of Maryland Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS), and the STAR Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) provided operational environmental data record support after the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) satellite came back online after it experienced an anomaly. William Straka (CIMSS), Yoo-Jeong Noh (CIRA), Denis Botambekov (CIMSS), and Jay Hoffman (CIMSS) provided timely validation analyses of the operational Cloud Mask and Cloud Base products. Qualitative and quantitative comparisons were made between SNPP and NOAA-20 products during pre- and post-anomaly periods. The teams did not find any data quality or performance degradations based on global cloud analyses created from a five day post-anomaly dataset, and for Arctic and Northern Hemisphere analyses in the case of the ice and snow products. Both teams recommended that their SNPP products can be produced and distributed in operational mode. (M. Kulie, E/RA2, 608-263-6583, mark.kulie@noaa.gov; J. AWARDS AND RECOGNITION:

TRAVEL AND MEETINGS:

CIMSS attendance at the National Weather Association (NWA) Meeting in Pittsburgh, 8/21-8-24 2022: The annual meeting of the National Weather Association (NWA) occurred from 20 through 24 August 2022 in Pittsburgh. Scott Lindstrom from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) attended the conference and gave two Showcase Presentations on sequential days. The first presentation was on Forecast Decision Training Division (FDTD) Satellite Applications Webinars, a peer-training webinar series organized by Lindstrom and by Dan Bikos at the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA). The second Showcase Presentation was on the importance of blogging (as done, for example, at the CIMSS Satellite blog: https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-blog) as a means of information-sharing about satellite data and products. Extensive interaction with NWS forecasters occurred during the meeting. (S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 608 263 4425)

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert interviews, imagery and case studies to promote science. This week: CIMSS Satellite Blog contributors Scott Lindstrom, Scott Bachmeier and Alexa Ross published these case studies: "Satellite imagery and multiple earthquakes near American Samoa" (Aug. 25), "30th anniversary of the Florida landfall of Hurricane Andrew" (Aug. 24), "Monthly Averages of GOES-17 Band 13 Brightness Temperatures for 2021" (Aug. 23), "Heavy rainfall and flash flooding across North Texas" (Aug. 22), "Grassland fire in North Dakota" (Aug. 21) and "Welcome back Suomi NPP!" (Aug. 19). Read more at the CIMSS Satellite Blog: https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-blog/. (S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, A. Ross, SSEC, J. Phillips, SSEC, 608-262-8164)
