TRAVEL AND MEETINGS:

Satellite Data for Energy Analysis and Policy Conference: A groundbreaking gathering took place in Madison, Wisconsin this week connecting satellite remote sensing researchers with energy analysts and policy professionals to advance the use of satellite data to tackle global challenges. Participants were introduced to a plethora of satellite data and applications including NOAA’s Wildfire Automated Biomass Burning Algorithm (WFABBA), among others, and the vast potential for satellite data to support decision-making. Full agenda at https://eap.wisc.edu/speakers-and-sessions/. (R.B. Pierce, SSEC, 608-890-1892, C. Schmidt, CIMSS, M. Mooney, CIMSS)

TRAINING AND EDUCATION:

Training at the forecast office on Guam: Scott Lindstrom from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) spent three days at the forecast office in Guam. The purpose of the visit was training for the forecast staff, the first in-person training offered by CIMSS since 2018; many new hires have occurred since then. Topics included Himawari Imagery, Weighting Functions, Scatterometry, RGB products (“RGBs are my new friend” -- a quote from a forecaster after training), Moisture Measurements, NUCAPS profiles, the CIMSS Tropical Weather website, and LightningCast probability. The total time spent training was approximately 20 hours spread over three days. Training was at the request of Pacific Region and NWS GUM management. (S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 608 263 4425)

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert interviews, imagery and case studies to promote science. This week: CIMSS Satellite Blog contributors Scott Lindstrom and Scott Bachmeier published these case studies: "Effects of convection over the southwestern United States and over the Pacific Ocean" (Oct. 7), "LightningCast Probabilities over Guam in a regime of light winds" (Oct. 6), "Island-effect thunderstorms affecting Guam" (Oct. 5), "Hurricane Ian makes landfall in South Carolina" (Sept. 30) and "Water changes over the Gulf of Mexico from Ian" (Sept. 30).
