CIMSS AND ASPB WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING DECEMBER 30, 2022

DATA, INFORMATION, AND USE-INSPIRED SCIENCE:

GOES-18 Ice Products Provisional Review: The GOES-18 ABI L2+ Fractional Snow Cover (FSC) Ice Concentration and Ice Age/Thickness Provisional Peer-Stakeholder Product Validation Review (PS-PVR) was held on 29 December 2022. The objective of the review was to assess the state of the GOES-18 ABI L2+ products according to the definition of Provisional maturity. The review covered data from GOES-18 but not GOES-17, as that spacecraft is entering storage mode. The ice product presentations were given by Feng He and Xuanji Wang (CIMSS) with input from Yinghui Liu (STAR), Jeff Key (STAR), Hong Zhang (CIMSS), and Rich Dworak (CIMSS). The review panel was chaired by Dan Lindsey and includes members from the Geostationary Earth-Orbiting Satellite Operational Requirements Working Group (GORWG), the Office of Satellite and Product Operations (OSPO), NWS, and GOES-R. The products passed the Provisional maturity review and the operational product is now available to users. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jeff.key@noaa.gov)

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert interviews, imagery and case studies to promote science. This week: CIMSS Satellite Blog contributors Margaret Mooney, Scott Bachmeier and Tim Schmit published these case studies: "2022 Satellite Highlights via Polar-Orbiting Imagery" (Dec. 30, https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-blog/archives/49528), "Trans-Pacific Atmospheric River" (Dec. 28), "Ocean effect snow in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts" (Dec. 26), "Satellite signature of blowing snow across the north-central US" (Dec. 23), "Cold Air Outbreak" (Dec. 23), "There GOES a Review of 2022" (Dec. 22, https://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-blog/archives/49198).
