CIMSS AND ASPB WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING JANUARY 20, 2023

DATA, INFORMATION, AND USE-INSPIRED SCIENCE:

FUTURE OUTLOOK:

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION:

TRAVEL AND MEETINGS:

University of Wisconsin-Madison CIMSS and SSEC Participation at the 2023 AMS 103rd Annual Conference: Representatives from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC), and the NOAA Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) participated in the 103rd Annual American Meteorological Society (AMS) meeting held the week of January 8-12, 2023 in Denver, CO. There were over 60 session chairing/co-chairing duties, oral presentations, and posters by CIMSS/SSEC staff as part of the 19th Annual Symposium on Operational Environmental Satellite Systems, 23rd Conference on Aviation, Range, and Aerospace Meteorology, 27th Conference on Integrated Observing and Assimilation Systems for the Atmosphere, Oceans, and Land Surface (IOAS-AOLS), 24th Symposium on Boundary Layers and Turbulence, 13th Conference on Transition of Research to Operations, 23rd Symposium on Meteorological Observation and Instrumentation, 22nd Conference on Artificial Intelligence for Environmental Science, 11th AMS Symposium on the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA), Special Symposium on Forecasting a Continuum of Environmental Threats (FACETs), 36th Conference on Climate Variability and Change, 37th Conference on Hydrology, Third Symposium on Mesoscale Processes, 23rd Symposium on Meteorological Observation and Instrumentation. Many participated in board, committee, and other side meetings including with NOAA OAR and NESDIS/STAR upper management on a host of topics. Several were judges for student presentations. The SSEC booth in the exhibit hall highlighted advances with CSPP Geosphere, McIDAS-V, SSEC RealEarth, Virtual Reality satellite visualization and other hardware/software support. Selected ‘one-page’ summaries of NOAA funded presentations will be posted at http://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/star/meetings.php with assistance of Ralph Ferraro (UMD/ESSIC). (W. Feltz, CIMSS/SSEC, 608-265-6283, wayne.feltz@ssec.wisc.edu; S. Lindstrom, CIMSS/SSEC, 608-263-4425, tlecuyer@wisc.edu, T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

TRAINING AND EDUCATION:

NUCAPS VISIT Training for Pacific Region Headquarters: Scott Lindstrom from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) gave a Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) webinar on NOAA-Unique Combined Atmospheric Processing System (NUCAPS) profiles and how they can be used in the forecast process. Because this was a training for Pacific Region, the gridded NUCAPS site created by NASA SPoRT (https://weather.msfc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/sportPublishData.pl?dataset=griddednucaps) was discussed as well, as that shows gridded NUCAPS around Hawaii, Guam, and American Samoa. (S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 608 263 4425).

CIMSS scientists talk to students about severe weather: Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientist Derrick Herndon spoke to students of Sun Prairie High School this week about severe weather and storm chasing. The presentation included information about how severe storms develop, how they are monitored by satellite data, challenges and dangers of storm chasing and tools developed by CIMSS researchers to improve short term severe weather forecasts. Students were then led in an exercise to create their own composite severe weather maps and issue appropriate severe weather watches based on the data. (D. Herndon, CIMSS, 608-262-6741)

MEDIA INTERACTIONS AND REQUESTS:

CIMSS scientists discuss atmospheric rivers: Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) tropical cyclone researcher and forecaster Derrick Herndon spoke with hosts of WISC-TV Live at 4 hosts about the impact of recent atmospheric river events on California (https://www.channel3000.com/watch-what-is-an-atmospheric-river/). In addition, he worked with UW News (University of Wisconsin) to record a video discussing atmospheric rivers for distribution by the Associated Press. (D. Herndon, CIMSS, 608-262-6741)

SOCIAL MEDIA AND BLOG Posts:

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the News: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert interviews, imagery and case studies to promote science. This week: 1) CIMSS Satellite Blog contributor Scott Lindstrom, Margaret Mooney and Scott Bachmeier published these case studies: "A small fire on the Texas Gulf Coast" (Jan. 19), "California’s Record Snowpack and Brimming Reservoirs" (Jan. 18) and "Warm Seclusion off the US East Coast" (Jan. 15).
