CIMSS-NOAA WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING JANUARY 5, 2024

DATA, INFORMATION, AND USE-INSPIRED SCIENCE:

Statement of Guidance for Sea Ice Observations Submitted to WMO: A draft Statement of Guidance for Cryosphere Applications was submitted to the Joint Expert team on Earth Observing System Design and Evolution (JET-EOSDE) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on 31 December 2023. The development of Statements of Guidance (SoG) is part of the new WMO Rolling Review of Requirements (RRR) process. A Statement of Guidance is a gap analysis with recommendations on how to address the gaps. It assesses the adequacy of current observations to fulfill user needs, and suggests potential improvements with space-based and surface-based observing systems. This draft cryosphere SoG is one the pilot studies intended to work through the process and provide feedback to JET-EOSDE. This pilot study focuses on sea ice observing requirements and gaps. Other components of the cryosphere -- snow, glaciers, ice sheets, permafrost, and solid precipitation -- will be added this year. As chair of the Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW) Cryosphere Observing Requirements (CRYORA) team, Jeff Key (STAR) leads the development of the cryosphere SoG. Other contributors from STAR were Ludovic Brucker and Sean Helfrich. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jeff.key@noaa.gov)

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the news: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert interviews, imagery and case studies to promote science and satellite imagery. This week: 1) CIMSS Satellite Blog contributors Tim Schmit, Scott Bachmeier and Scott Lindstrom published the following case studies: "GOES-16 enters Mode 4 (update: Mode 4 operations have ended)" (January 04); "Hurricane Force Low approaches the Aleutian Islands" (January 03) ; "Using an RGB and LightningCast Probability to monitor convective development" (January 02).
