FUTURE OUTLOOK:

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION:

CIMSS Weather Camp Student receives award for using NOAA data: Lorenzo Pulmano was named a top 300 Scholar in the 83rd Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS)—the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and mathematics competition for high school seniors. Lorenzo attended the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Weather Camp in 2023 and has been working with Derrick Herndon (CIMSS) on a project to predict hurricane eyewall replacement cycles (ERC) using data from the NOAA Hurricane Satellite Microwave (HURSAT-MW) data archive. Lorenzo has developed a model to objectively determine the development of an ERC in 89 Ghz microwave satellite data using an ensemble of Convolution Neural Network models. The output of this model was then compared to the CIMSS ERC model M-PERC that is used by the National Hurricane Center and other global TC warning agencies to estimate the onset of ERCs. Results of this work have been submitted for publication to Tropical Cyclone Research and Review (TCRR). (D. Herndon, CIMSS, 608-262-6741)

SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the news: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert interviews, imagery and case studies to promote science and satellite imagery. This week: 1) CIMSS Satellite Blog contributors Tim Schmit, Scott Bachmeier and Scott Lindstrom published the following case studies: "Microwave and infrared estimates of rainfall" (January 10); "Heavy rainfall across Hawai`i (along with a Severe Thunderstorm Warning and a Tornado Warning)" (January 09); "LightningCast probability with a High Plains blizzard" (January 08); "Foehn gap and orographic crest cloud downwind of the Sierra Nevada" (January 06).
