Sean Helfrich Visits CIMSS: Sean Helfrich, Acting Deputy Director of the US National Ice Center (USNIC) and a NESDIS/STAR cryosphere scientist, visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS). Sean met with a number of CIMSS researchers who specialize in use of satellites to monitor and characterize snow, ice, and floods, including Kavita Mitkari, Tian Tian, William Straka III, and Jeff Key. SSEC and CIMSS Scientists in the news: Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) provide expert interviews, imagery and case studies to promote science and satellite imagery. This week and last: 1) CIMSS Satellite Blog contributors Scott Bachmeier and Scott Lindstrom, and NOAA Scientist Tim Schmit published the following case studies: "VIIRS SSTs and Day Night Band imagery, late March 2024" (March 29); "Tools for Forecasting Clouds (on April 8th)" (March 27); "Blowing snow and blowing dust in Grand Forks ND" (March 26); "SNUCAPS Profiles over Guam" (March 26); "Swaths of snow cover across Iowa, northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin" (March 23); "Cloud band hugging the shore of Lake Michigan" (March 21).
