What time period does each image cover?

Each image is a composite over a 24 hour period beginning at 0Z.

Why are there large areas without wind values?

For the most part these are cloudy areas. The inversion retrieval procedure is for clear sky only.

How does the procedure work?

Briefly, radiosonde data are matched with MODIS brightness temperatures at 7.2, 11, and 12 microns. Then regression equations are formulated for the relationship between inversion strength or inversion depth and brightness temperature differences. The procedure is documented in:

Liu, Y. and J. Key, 2002, Detection and analysis of clear sky, low-level atmospheric temperature inversions with MODIS, J. Atmos. Ocean. Tech., 20, 1727-1737. PDF version

Are the actual data available rather than just the plots?

Not at present. If you're interested, send us a message.

Are the data archived?

Not yet.
