Overview

This page provides near real-time plots of clear sky, low-level atmospheric temperautre inversion strength and depth over the Arctic and Antarctic from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). Inversion strength is the temperature difference across the inversion, i.e., the difference between the surface temperature and the maximum temperature in the troposphere. Inversion depth is the height of the maximum temperature in the troposphere above the surface. Inversions are assumed to be based at the surface.
