Science Update Radio Program Features Geostationary Satellite Fire Detection and Monitoring: On August 1, Science Update, a radio show for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), featured a segment on applications of the new Geostationary Wildfire Automated Biomass Burning Algorithm in detecting and monitoring fires in real time based on an earlier interview with E. Prins. Science Update is a 90-second feature that highlights interesting new research for a lay audience. The segment was also made available via RealAudio on the following web site http://www.scienceupdate.com. (E. Prins, E/RA2, 608-263-6607)
ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD:
Arctic Regional Climate Model Meeting: J. Key
participated in a meeting of the Arctic Regional Climate Model Intercomparison
Project (ARCMIP) at the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute
in Norrkoping, Sweden. He gave an invited presentation on satellite
data sets that can be used for forcing and verification of regional climate
models for the polar regions, including retrievals of cloud, surface, and
radiative properties from polar-orbiting imagers, and the new polar winds
project. ARCMIP involves a comparison of five regional models
from the U.S., Sweden, Norway, Germany, and Canada. The model experiments
are currently utilizing an ice surface temperature product developed by the
Advanced Satellite Products Team. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)
Presentation at the Green Bay Chapter of the AMS: On July 30, E. Prins gave a presentation to the Packerland chapter of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) at the Brown County Central Library in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The presentation included two parts, a general overview of research activities at the University of Wisconsin Space Science and Engineering Center and a summary of wildfire detection and monitoring using Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES). (E. Prins, E/RA2, 608-263-6607)
Heidinger Joins ASPT: Andrew Heidinger, Office
of Research and Applications, joined the Advanced Satellite Products Team
(ASPT) in Madison, Wisconsin on July 29. Dr. Heidinger will continue
his work with clouds from polar-orbiting imagers, and will conduct research
relevant to the design and use of the future Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI).
