CLAVR system tested on AVHRR data from NOAA-17:
The operational demo of the Clouds from AVHRR (CLAVR) system was modified
for and tested on Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data from
the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) -17 polar-orbiting
satellite. The results indicated no difficulty in running CLAVR in this
new orbital configuration, and showed good consistency between products computed
from NOAA-16 data, except for those that rely on the reflectance channels.
Early indications are that NOAA-17 AVHRR preflight reflectance calibration

Polar Winds Paper Accepted: A paper titled "Cloud-drift and Water Vapor Winds in the Polar Regions from MODIS" was accepted for publication, subject to minor revision, in the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensingfor a special issue on the Aqua satellite. The authors are J. Key (Office of Research and Applications, ORA), D. Santek (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, CIMSS), C. Velden (CIMSS), N. Bormann (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, ECMWF), J.-N. Thepaut (ECMWF), L.P. Riishojgaard (Data Assimilation Office, DAO), Y. Zhu (DAO), and W.P. Menzel (ORA). The paper describes how wind information can be obtained from polar-orbiting imagers, specifically the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and provides results from model impact studies at ECMWF and DAO. GOES-8 Sounder Retrieval Total Precipitable Water
for July 2002: An evaluation of the Geostationary Operational Environmental
Satellite (GOES)-8 Sounder Total Precipitable Water (TPW) operational 5 X
5 Field of View (FOV) retrievals for the month of July 2002 has been completed.
The National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS)
retrievals were on average only 0.12 millimeters (mm) drier than the radiosondes
for retrievals with 10-25 clear FOVs and radiosondes collocated within 25
kilometers. This is encouraging agreement; exact agreement between
satellite retrievals and radiosondes is not generally expected due to differences
