GOES Water Vapor and Clouds Improve Precipitaton
Forecast for Isidore: The National Centers for Environmental Prediction's
(NCEP) Eta forecast model did not capture precipitation over Tennessee and
Kentucky from Tropical Storm Isidore when it moved ashore from the Gulf of
Mexico, as validated by River Forecast Center rain gauges. One reason
for this may be due to the fact that the Eta Data Assimilation System (EDAS)
does not use water vapor or cloud information from the Geostationary Operational
Environmental Satellite (GOES) over the Gulf of Mexico. Experiments
with the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Studies (CIMSS) Regional
Assimilation System (CRAS) show a more accurate precipitation forecast when
GOES water vapor and cloud top pressure are assimilated over water as well
as land. (R. Aune, E/RA2, 608-262-1071)
Figure caption: The plots show 48 hour forecast precipitation, 24 hour
accumulations of 6 mm or greater valid September 26, 2002. The precipitation
resulted from Tropical Storm Isidore as it came ashore. The Eta model
forecast did not capture the precipitation in Tennessee and Kentucky. The
CRAS model uses precipitable water and cloud top pressure retrievals from
the GOES Sounders; the Eta Data Assimilation System (EDAS) does not use GOES
water vapor or cloud information over water.
PoDAG Meeting: J. Key attended the Polar DAAC
Advisory Group (PoDAG) meeting in Boulder, Colorado on September 24-25. PoDAG
advises the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), a Distributed Active
Archive Center (DAAC), on matter related to dataset acquisition, distribution,
and applications. (J. Key, E/RA2,
608-263-2605)
Extended Abstract Submitted for AMS Conference: A
proceedings paper entitled "Channel Selection For The Next Generation Geostationary
Advanced Baseline Imagers", by T. Schmit, W.P. Menzel, J. Sieglaff, J. Nelson,
and M. Griffin, was submitted for the upcoming 12th Conference on Satellite
Meteorology and Oceanography at the 2003 AMS Annual Meeting in Long Beach,
California, February 9-13, 2003. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)
Extended Abstract Submitted for SPIE Conference:
A proceedings paper entitled "Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) for future
Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES-R and beyond)",
by T. Schmit, J. Li, and W.P. Menzel, was submitted for the upcoming
Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) meeting in Hangzhou,
China: (T. Schmit,
E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

Kenneth Knapp Visits CIMSS: Kenneth Knapp, a Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) visiting scientist at the Office of Research and Applications (ORA), visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) on September 24 and 25. He met with E. Prins and J. Feltz to discuss geostationary aerosol detection and quantification techniques and possible areas of collaboration with the CIMSS biomass burning team, including specific case study analyses and future implementation of global geostationary fire and smoke products. He presented a CIMSS seminar titled "The GOES Aerosol Smoke Product." (E. Prins, E/RA2, 608-263-6607, J. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-263-3434)
NEXT WEEK:
Upcoming GOES Users Conference: T. Schmit, W. P. Menzel and A. Heidinger will attend and present at the second GOES Users Conference in Boulder, CO. The conference itself with run October 1-3, 2002. September 30th is a meeting of the program committee and October 4th will be a meeting to summarize the conference. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

View angle differences while comparing GOES instruments: In a comparison of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) -12 to GOES-8 during the GOES-12 checkout period there were notable differences in brightness temperature caused by view angle differences. View angle changes the brightness temperature by varying amounts for different bands on the GOES-12 Sounder. The comparison information was provided to Gary Ellrod of the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) to assist with his work comparing GOES-12 to GOES-8. The results are representative of similar bands on other GOES instruments. (M. Gunshor, CIMSS, 608-263-1146, T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)
