Polar Winds in
ECMWF E-suite: The real-time polar winds product derived from
the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) are being
assimilated in the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts
(ECMWF) "E-suite". The E-suite is the last pre-operational test
of model, analysis, and data changes. It is run in parallel with
the operational system to allow for testing and comparisons. (J. Key, E/RA2,
608-263-2605, D. Santek,
CIMSS, 608-263-7410, C.
Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168)
ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD:
Review of IJRS
Manuscripts for Special SAFARI Issue: Two manuscripts were
reviewed by E. Prins for a special issue of the International Journal of Remote Sensing
(IJRS) focusing on the SAFARI 2000 (Southern African Regional Science
Initiative). The manuscripts were titled "Characterizing the
Surface Heterogeneity of Fire Effects Using Multi-Temporal Reflective
Wavelength Data" and "Estimation of Combustion Completeness Based
on Fire-Induced Spectral Reflectance Changes in a Dambo Grassland in
the Western Province, Zambia." Both papers addressed the use of
pre- and post-fire multispectral remotely sensed reflective data to
retrieve combustion completeness and other fire characteristics.
Initial work indicates that although determination of combustion
completeness is problematic, the results demonstrate some degree of
applicably and further investigation is warranted. (E. Prins, E/RA2,
530-271-2256)
Review of JGR
Manuscript: A manuscript for the Journal of Geophysical Research
titled "Clouds and cloud-radiative forcing at high latitude: a case
study at Cape Herschel" was reviewed by J. Key. The paper
describes differences in cloud properties and cloud radiative effects
at two Arctic locations. (J.
Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)
VISITORS:
NEXT WEEK:
ORA Retreat: Members of the
Advanced Satellite Products Team (ASPT) will travel to Camp Springs, MD
to participate in the Office of Research and Applications/Center for
Satellite Applications and Research (ORA/STAR) annual retreat. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)
SPOP Meeting: T. Schmit will
convene a Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)
Sounding Product Oversight Panel (SPOP) meeting at the World Weather
Building on January 7 at 1:30 pm. (T. Schmit, E/RA2,
608-263-0291)
ORA Seminar: T. Schmit will be
giving a seminar titled "Bands and Products from the next generation
geostationary imager" at FB-4 in room 1306 at 9:30-11:30 am on Friday,
January 10, 2003. (T. Schmit,
