snowflakes, and a reading of "Snowflake Bentley". W. Bentley
pioneered the photographing of snow crystals. The W. Bentley snow
images were from the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC)

Proposal Submitted
to NIFC Joint Fire Science Program: F. Mims (Geronimo
Creek Observatory, TX) submitted a proposal titled "Surface
Ozone, Smoke Dispersion and Novel Biological Aspects of Smoke from
Biomass Fires" to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) Joint
Fire Science Program to provide new information for fire managers
working in the United States regarding atmospheric and biological
impacts of smoke on rural and urban locations. The proposal
focuses on the impact of biomass smoke on ozone formation, correlation
of smoke dispersion models with ground measurements and satellite
imagery, and the investigation of fungi and bacteria in smoke plumes
with implications for both human health and fire ecology. E.
Prins and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite
Studies (CIMSS) will collaborate with F. Mims on satellite fire and
smoke detection and transport issues. (E. Prins, E/RA2,
530-271-2256)
Review of JAM article: T. Schmit reviewed a
manuscript for the Journal of
