NPOESS Operational Algorithm Team Meetings:
A. Heidinger participated in the Visible/Infrared Imager and Radiometer
Suite (VIIRS) Operational Algorithm Team (VOAT) meeting last
week. The VIIRS is the next generation imager for NPOESS.
A. Heidinger gave a presentation to the VOAT on the cloud mask studies
underway at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite
Studies (CIMSS) and delivered a report at the plenary session on the
first day.

ABI Images Spectrally Simulated from Daily Broadcast AIRS data: The Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) is providing an in-house beta broadcast of Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) data. These data are used to spectrally simulate infra-red bands that will be on the next generation Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) imager, the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI). The improved spatial resolution that the ABI will have is not simulated. The images and brightness temperatures files are updated daily at 2300 UTC and can be found at http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/abi/airs_broadcast/aniairs.html. (J. Sieglaff, CIMSS, T. CREST Student Visit Ends: Ana Picon, a
graduate student from the University of Puerto Rico, completed her
two-month visit to the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological
Satellite Studies (CIMSS). The University of Puerto Rico is part
of the new NOAA
Cooperative Remote Sensing Science and Technology (CREST) Center.
During her stay in Madison, Ms. Picon's research focused on cloud
height retrievals from different satellite sensors. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)
Abstract submitted to Annual AMS Meeting: An abstract has been submitted to the 20th Interactive Information and Processing Systems (IIPS) Conference, to be convened during the 84th annual American Meteorological Society (AMS) meeting January 11-15, 2003 in Seattle, Washington. The paper is entitled "A study of data and products from the GOES-9 Imager and Sounder over the western Pacific Ocean", and will be presented during one of the poster sessions. Examples of derived products available from the instruments will be shown, and quantitative evaluations will also be undertaken. (J. Nelson, CIMSS, 608-263-6013, G.S. Wade, E/RA2, 608-263-4743, A. VISITORS:
GLERL Scientist Visit: George Leshkevich, from the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Laboratory (GLERL) in Ann Arbor, Michigan, visited the Advanced Satellite Products Team and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) August 6-7. His research involves water quality remote sensing and he leads the Great Lakes node of the NOAA Coastwatch program. CIMSS and ASPT scientists met with Mr. Leshkevich to discuss the delivery of MODIS data from the CIMSS direct broadcast reception facility, and the reprocessing of NOAA polar orbiter imager data for use in generating climatologies of key parameters in the Great Lakes regions.
