ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING AUGUST 20, 2004
IN THE PRESS:
ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:
ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:
Fourth Hyperspectral Workshop: The 4th NOAA Hyperspectral
Workshop
was held August 17-19, 2004 in Madison, WI. There were more than 50
participants from the government, academia, and the private sector. The
main goal was to explore broadband adequacy versus hyperspectral
necessity for environmental characterizations (land, ocean, atmosphere,
etc.). Presentations were given on a range of topics showing how
hyperspectral information can help fulfill NOAAs goals. The
presentations are on-line at: http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/meetings/4th_hyperspectral/slides/4th_hyperspectral_list.html. >

Significance:
Meetings such as this one are important to
understand and better prepare for all the uses of hyperspectral data to
monitor the land, ocean and atmospheric system.
Supports Climate and Weather&Water Goals:
Understand climate variability and change to enhance society's ability
to
plan and respond and serve society's needs for weather and water
information. Also supports ecosystems and safe and efficient
transportation.
Supports the following NOAA Cross-Cutting Priorities:
Integrated Global Environmental Observation and Data Management System;
and Sound, Reliable State-of-the-Art Research.

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD
Tropical Cyclone Webpage Extremely Popular:
The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS)
Tropical Cyclone webpage was inundated with requests during the two day
period when Tropical Storm (TS) Bonnie and Hurricane Charley threatened
the Gulf Coast of Florida. On August 12th, when TS Bonnie
made landfall over the Florida panhandle, the web page handled over
890000+
hits from 66,000+ different sites, and transfered more than 63
Gigabytes
(63,000,000KBytes) of data. On August 23th, when Hurricane
Charley hit the Fort Myers
region, the web page again handled over 916000+ hits from 69,000+
different sites
and transfered more than 64 GigaBytes of data. The CIMSS tropical
cyclone webpage
distributes unique imagery, valuable environmental analysis products,
and specific
storm information products to forecast centers and storm enthusiasts
worldwide. (T. Olander, CIMSS, 608-265-8005, C. Velden, CIMSS,

Papers on Arctic Climate Based on Satellite Data
Accepted for Publication: Two papers describing spatial and
temporal trends in Arctic surface, cloud, and radiative properties
based on satellite data were accepted for publication, subject to
reviewion, in the Journal of Climate. Both papers were
co-authored by X. Wang, Cooperative Institute for Meteorological
Satellite Studies (CIMSS), and J. Key. The titles are "Arctic
surface, cloud, and radiation properties based on the AVHRR Polar
Pathfinder data set. Part I: Spatial and temporal characteristics" and
"Arctic surface, cloud, and radiation properties based on the AVHRR
Polar Pathfinder data set. Part II: Recent trends". (J. Key,
E/RA2, 608-263-2605)
VISITORS:
OSDPD Personnel Visit SSEC:
Office of Satellite Data Processing and Distribution (OSDPD) division
chiefs Reggie Lawrence and Dave Benner visited the Space Science and
Engineering Center (SSEC) on Monday, August 16, 2004. The OSDPD
group also included Patti Skews, Barb Hickman, and Tom
Renkevens. D. Santek (SSEC) hosted the meeting, which
focused on SSEC Desktop Ingestors (SDI) and activities with current and
future polar-orbiter data. A. Heidinger presented an overview of
SSEC/CIMSS activities with NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution
Radiometer Data (AVHRR). The OSDPD contingent expressed an
interest in using the SSEC Data Center AVHRR Level 1b processing as a
backup to the OSDPD AVHRR processing. Heidinger also pointed out the
potential savings in the large and costly effort of porting code from
the old Amdahl platform if more OSDPD AVHRR applications would feed off
the outputs from the Clouds from AVHRR extended processing (CLAVR-x)
system that already runs on the new platform. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2,
