Infusing satellite Data into Environmental
Applications (IDEA) Meeting with State of Wisconsin:
A. Wimmers and S. Bachmeier met with State of Wisconsin Department of
Natural Resources / Bureau of Air Management staff on September 8 to
discuss the Infusing satellite Data into Environmental Applications
(IDEA) project. They discussed techniques for interpreting true color
Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data and MODIS
aerosol products, as well as validating chemical transport models with
MODIS data to fulfill state requirements to improve air quality at
protected locations. The state air quality forecasters provided input
on how to improve the utility of the IDEA web site and product suite.

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, ARAD
Abstracts Submitted to Fall American Geophysical
Union Meeting: Two abstracts dealing with assimilation of
satellite derived fire products in air quality modeling efforts were
submitted to the Fall American Geophysical Union (AGU) meeting to be
held December 13-17, 2004 in San Francisco. The first, by
J. Wang (University of Alabama Huntsville) et al., is titled "The
Effect of Central American Smoke Aerosols on the Air Quality and
Climate over the Southeastern United States: First Results from
RAMS-AROMA" (Regional Atmospheric Modeling System Assimilation
and Radiation Online Modeling of Aerosols). The second, by S.
Nandi (University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR)), is
titled "Uncertainties in Satellite Based Fire Emission
Inventories." E. Prins serves as a co-author on these
abstracts. (E. Prins, E/RA2, 530-271-2256)
