Satellite Data
Utilization Forum at the NWA Annual Meeting: G. Wade and R. Aune
conducted a two-hour forum on Better Utilization of Satellite
Information at the annual meeting of the National Weather Association
(NWA). The forum, designed to stimulate the exchange of ideas
through open discussion amongst providers and users with the objective
of promoting increased utilization of satellite data in operational
weather forecasting, was presented on Tuesday afternoon, and again on
Wednesday afternoon to attendees which included many operational
forecasters from government and the private sector. Discussions
ranged from efficient use of forecaster time, improving warning lead
times, conveying information to the average person, fog detection,
scheduled outages, and improving the quality of NWP forecasts.
Examples of new satellite products were presented, along with examples
of how satellite observations can be used to improve numerical
forecasts of clouds and precipitation. (R. Aune, E/24, 608-262-1071,
and G. Wade, E/24, 608-263-4743)
National Weather Service Mesoscale Analysis
Committee (MAC): R. Aune has been appointed a member of the
Mesoscale Analysis Committee (MAC), sponsored by the National Weather
Service, which is tasked with designing a realtime surface analysis
system that will be used to validate forecast grids from the National
Digital Forecast Database (NDFD). At the first meeting, held in
Silver Spring last week, a plan was formulated to implement a pilot
system within the next six months that will use existing software
modules from the Rapid Update Cycle (RUC) analysis, the Eta Data
Assimilation System, and insitu surface data to generate hourly,
5-kilometer grids of temperature, dew point, surface pressure and
winds. Precipitation amounts will come from the a gridded radar
product and sky cover will be retrieved using the GOES imager and
sounder. (R. Aune, E/RA2, 608-262-1071)
Presentations at the annual NWA meeting: T.
Schmit gave an invited
presentation at the annual National Weather Association (NWA) meeting.
The title was "Operational benefits of the Advanced Baseline Imager
(ABI) on Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites
(GOES)-R". T. Schmit also presented "The GOES-12 Imager Cloud
Product" by A. Schreiner. The NWA meeting was held in Portland,
OR. (T.
Schmit, E/RA2,
608-263-0291)
Poster on GOES-R presented at the Climate
Diagnostics and Prediction
Workshop: The 29th Annual National Oceanic and
Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop was
held at the Monona Terrace Convention Center in Madison, WI. T. Schmit
presented a poster on "Improvements of the Geostationary
Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES)-R series for climate
applications". The authors were Timothy J. Schmit, W. P.
Menzel James J. Gurka, Elaine M. Prins and Mathew M. Gunshor. (T.
Schmit, E/RA2,
608-263-0291)
Posters on AVHRR Cloud Climatologies presented at
the Climate Diagnostics and Prediction
Workshop: Two posters covering recent work to derive a
new AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) cloud climatology
were presented at the 29th Annual National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) Climate Diagnostics and Prediction
Workshop. One poster presented an overview of the AVHRR
Pathfinder Atmospheres Extended (PATMOS-x) project while the other
showed preliminary results from the PATMOS-x cloud climatology
(1982-2004). (A. Heidinger, E/RA2,
608-263-6757, M. Pavolonis, CIMSS, 608-263-9597)
Poster on GOES
Cloud Products presented at the Climate Diagnostics and Prediction
Workshop: The 29th Annual National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop was
held on 18-22 October, 2004 at the Monona Terrace Convention Center in
Madison, WI. A.J. Schreiner presented a poster entitled "GOES Cloud
Products and Cloud Studies." The co-authors are A.J. Schreiner, T.J.
Schmit, W.P. Menzel, J. Li, J.A. Jung, S.A. Ackerman, W.F. Feltz and
R.M. Aune.
