AVHRR Reprocessing Meeting: A.
Heidinger presided over a meeting of ORA scientists involved in the
Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) reprocessing
effort. This meeting was focused on reporting the progress of the
AVHRR Pathfinder Atmospheres Extended (PATMOS-x) and the Global
Vegetation Index (GVI-x) projects. Both of these projects are currently
producing preliminary data sets that will be used to validate the
algorithms and calibrations before the reprocessing of the entire AVHRR
Global Area Coverage (GAC) archive begins later this year. (A.

Visits to Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center
Weather Offices: J. Key visited the Space and Naval Warfare Systems
Center (SPAWAR) weather offices in Christchurch, New Zealand and
McMurdo, Antarctica ("Mac Weather"). Both offices provide weather
forecasts in support of western Antarctic flight and field
operations. The Meteorology Managers at each location are Chester
Clogston and Ken Edeles, respectively. Key, Clogston, and Edeles
discussed the current use of satellite and model data in forecasting,
and the potential use of new satellite-derived products such as the
Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) polar winds. (J.
