Cloud Top Temperature Product Compared from
CLAVR-x and MODIS Products: A comparison was made between the cloud
top temperature and emissivity products from the Clouds from
AVHRR Extended (CLAVR-x) and NASA's Moderate Imaging Spectroradiometer
(MODIS). The CLAVR-x algorithm was recently improved and is
running on data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer
(AVHRR) within NOAA Office of Satellite Data Processing and
Distribution (OSDPD). These results from the improved algorithm
demonstrate the ability of the CLAVR-x split-window algorithm to
produce comparable results for many cases to those from the CO2 slicing
algorithm used by MODIS. Many of the clouds in this comparison
were optically thin with emissivities less than 0.5. The
relatively small number of large differences may be attributed to the
twenty minute difference between the two observations. The
differences at warm cloud temperatures are actually due to a recently
discovered bug in the MODIS algorithm. The same CLAVR-x algorithm is
also running on data from the imagers on GOES-9 and GOES-10. (A.

Changes in Calibration Mode for GOES-12 Sounder:
On December 6, 2004 at approximately 18:30 GMT, the Office of Satellite
Operations (OSO)/Satellite Operations Control Center (SOCC) switched
the calibration mode of the Geostationary Operational Environmental
Sounder (GOES)-12 to utilize gain mode 3. This mode uses long
term averaging of the sounder infrared calibrations, which effectively
reduces striping. The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological
Satellite Studies (CIMSS) was asked to confirm and investigate this
change. (M. Gunshor, CIMSS,

Talk on Imager/Sounder Cloud Property Retrieval
American Geophysical Union Meeting:
Jun Li gave a talk at the Fall American Geophysical Union (AGU) Meeting
held in San Francisco, California from December 13-17, 2004. The
title
of the talk was "Cloud property retrieval and cloud clearing from MODIS
and AIRS". (J. Li, CIMSS, 608-262-3755)
