Invited Talks on GOES-R HES at Optical Society
of America (OSA) Conference: Two invited talks on the Geostationary
Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Hyperspectral
Environmental Suite (HES) were given at the Optical Society of America
(OSA) conference "Hyperspectral Imaging and Sounding of the
Environment" in Alexandria, VA on January 31, 2005. The first
presentation was given by C. Brown, titled “Coastal Waters
Imaging Capability on GOES-R Hyperspectral Environmental Suite:
Characteristics and Applications”. T. Schmit gave the second HES
talk titled "Applications of the GOES-R HES (Hyperspectral
Environmental Suite) Infrared measurements" which covered the current
filter-wheel GOES Sounder, the HES-Sounder on GOES-R, applications, and
synergy with the GOES-R imager. More information on the conference can
be found at: http://www.osa.org/meetings/topicals/FTS_HISE/abouthise/.

Significance:
It was suggested at the 3rd GOES-R Users Conference that NOAA
should increase GOES-R visibility through outreach at planned venues.
These talks at the Hyperspectral Imaging and Sounding of the
Environment are in support of that effort. Many national and
international experts in the area of high-spectral resolution
measurements were at this conference.
Supports the following NOAA Mission Goals:
1. Protect, restore, and manage the use of coastal and ocean resources
through ecosystem-based management
2. Understand climate variability and change to enhance society's
ability to plan and respond.
3. Serve society's needs for weather and water information.
4. Support the Nation's commerce with information for safe,
efficient, and environmentally sound transportation.

Feature-tracked Winds from Atmospheric Infrared
Sounder Retrievals: A first-ever demonstration of extracting
atmospheric motions from satellite sounder retrieved moisture fields
was performed by the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological
Satellite Studies (CIMSS) winds group. 400 hPa specific humidity fields
were derived using a CIMSS retrieval algorithm applied to Single Field
of View (SFOV) Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) data from the Aqua
satellite. The winds were produced by tracking moisture features from a
sequence of three near-polar retrieved humidity field images separated
in time by 100 minutes each. A coherent set of vectors was obtained.
These very preliminary results from low resolution AIRS retrievals are
encouraging in that future instruments with much improved temporal and
spatial sampling should yield even better quantities. (D. Santek, CIMSS

NOAA Arctic Climate Science Priorities Meeting:
J. Key attended the NOAA Arctic Climate Science Priorities workshop
in Silver Spring, February 2-3. The goal of the meeting was to
develop a set of recommendations to guide NOAA priorities and plans for
Arctic climate research over the 2008-20012 time frame, including
near-term plans and
initial coordination with the International Polar Year (IPY). The
meeting was organized by NOAA Research. (J. Key, E/RA2,

VIIRS Operational Algorithm Team Meeting:
Andrew Heidinger chaired the recent meeting of the Visible and Infrared
Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Operational Algorithm Team (VOAT) held
in Redondo Beach, California. The VOAT meetings serve as a
semi-annual review of the status of the VIIRS sensor and
algorithms. The meetings are attended by the members of the VOAT,
the Integrated Program Office and NPOESS prime contractor, Northrop
Grumman Space Technologies. The NESDIS Office of Research
and Applications has a large presence on the VOAT with several
scientists participating in various activities. In addition to
chairing the meeting, A. Heidinger also drafted the minutes. (A.
Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757)
Upgrade of Advanced Objective Dvorak Technique
Delivered to NWS:
Since the prototype version of the Cooperative Institute for
Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Advanced Objective Dvorak
Technique (AODT) was successfully implemented on the Tropical
Prediction Center (TPC) N-AWIPS, the focus has been on helping to
evaluate and maintain the algorithm performance, and providing
subsequent updates to the N-AWIPS code when new and successful research
modifications are demonstrated. The AODT is used to estimate tropical
cyclone intensity. During the 2004 Atlantic and East
Pacific hurricane season, the AODT was run in real time at TPC.
Towards the end of the season, feedback from TPC was received on the
overall AODT performance; additionally, CIMSS conducted an internal
evaluation of the performance during this season. The combined
evaluation was used to modify, test and implement upgrades to the
existing AODT algorithm. Performance metrics show that the
modifications have led to significant improvements in the AODT. The new
version (6.4) has been delivered to the National Weather Service (NWS)
for integration into the TPC
N-AWIPS.
