Paper on Mixed-Phase Clouds Published: A
paper titled "The Characterization and Radiative Impact of a Springtime
Mixed-Phase Cloudy Boundary Layer observed during SHEBA" was published
in the Journal of the Atmospheric
Sciences, January 2005. The authors are P. Zuidema
(University of Colorado, CU), B. Baker (Stratton Park Engineering,
SPE), Y. Han (NOAA/ETL), J. Intrieri (ETL), J. Key (NOAA/NESDIS), P.
Lawson (SPE), S. Matrosov (CU), M. Shupe (Science and Technology
Corp.), R. Stone (CU), T. Uttal (ETL). The paper describes the
retrieval of cloud microphysical properties with surface-based radar
and lidar instruments, as well as the radiative effect of mixed-phase
clouds during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic (SHEBA)
experiment. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605)

Other Meetings and Telecons:
On February 14, a tele-con was held on the status of the Geostationary
Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Sounder Single field of view
processing status. This meeting was with A. Schreiner and J. Nelson
(Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS)),
T. Schmit, G. Wade, and J. Daniels (NESDIS), and Gary Gray
(Raytheon Technical Services Company).
On February 16, A. Heidinger, T. Schmit, M. Weinreb, and X. Wu held a
teleconference to discuss Geostationary Operational Environmental
Satellite (GOES)-R channel compatibility. The main issue was a proposal
of making the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) channels identical to the
corresponding Visible/Infrared Imager/Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) channels
that would facilitate the ABI-VIIRS cross calibration in future.
VISITORS:
NEXT WEEK:
T. Schmit and J. Key will be part of the Technical Advisory
Committee for the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite
(GOES) R Risk Reduction Activities Review on February 22 and 23rd in
Silver Spring. On the 24th T. Schmit will meet with J. Daniels and C.
Holland, Office of Satellite Data Processing and Distribution (OSDPD)
regarding the status of several GOES products.
